Virgin Australia to Cut 750 Jobs

Virgin Australia announced it will cut 750 jobs as part of a restructuring plan that will also include dropping unprofitable routes. The decision came after the Australian carrier posted a “disappointing” full-year loss of $236 million on Wednesday, which it blamed partly on increased fuel prices and the weak Australian dollar. The majority of the job losses will be borne by staff at Virgin Australia’s headquarters in Brisbane.

Scandinavian Airlines’ CEO, Rickard Gustafson, said he expects governments to impose more stringent environmental regulations on airlines unless the industry makes substantial progress in reducing its carbon footprint. Boliviana de Aviacion Receives Government Funds to Buy Airbus A330s

Bolivia’s government announced a $17.5-million cash injection into Boliviana de Aviacion (BoA), the country’s state-owned carrier. The money will be used to speed up the replacement of the airline’s Boeing 767s with Airbus A330s. “[BoA] has been profitable for the last nine years, so this money is not for compensating losses, which do not exist, but to fund our fleet renewal and internal restructuring,” said Hugo Estrada, BoA's chief commercial officer. The first A330 will arrive in December, followed by a second in June 2020. Estrada said the total number of A330s is “still under discussion.”
