FTE Global: Apple Shares Its Vision of the Future Travel Experience

Apple vice-president of iPad Product Marketing Michael Tchao – the first Apple executive to ever deliver a keynote at an FTE Global event – explained how tools like the SkyPath iPad app and United’s ConnectionSaver service, which uses Apple Maps’ indoor airport terminal maps functionality, will shape the future of air travel. He also noted that more than 450 airlines around the world are currently using iPads to support their operations.

Burrana Marks Retrofit Success, Expands in Mexico

In a slew of announcements, Burrana has confirmed the completion of its first cabin configuration program with Jamco Aero Design and Engineering since the two formed a partnership in November 2018. The company has also said it will be retrofitting LATAM’s Airbus A320 and A321 fleets, which totals over 100 aircraft, with its in-seat power solution. Elsewhere, Burrana is moving its Mexico manufacturing facility to a new 15,000-square-foot location to accommodate a vast increase in staff since it acquired Collins Aerospace’s in-flight entertainment business in January this year.

Las Vegas McCarran Testing New Body Scanner

Travelers at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas may soon be able to pass through security without presenting a boarding pass or removing laptops from their bags. The “innovation checkpoint” is being tested in an isolated area and currently processes only 200 travelers an hour, compared to the 1,200 at regular checkpoints. “We're not just focusing on the next shiny hardware… We're focusing on effectiveness, efficiency and utilizing those passengers that travel through those areas to give us feedback,” said Jose Bonilla, director of TSA’s Innovation Task Force.

CastLabs Announces Latest Version of App-Less Playback Feature

CastLabs, a confirmed exhibitor for APEX EXPO next week, has released the latest version of its DRMtoday Onboard solution. The technology, created with Lufthansa Systems, enables secure browser-based access to onboard media libraries, meaning passengers can watch digital rights management (DRM)-protected movies on their personal devices without downloading an app. New features of the latest version include meeting ultra-high definition (UHD) content requirements, such as watermarking, and addressing the latest DRM feature requirements.

[PHOTOS] Air Canada Debuts Café-Style Premium Lounge at YYZ

Air Canada opened a new premium lounge modeled on a more casual café concept at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport today. Air Canada Café offers everything from cold-brew Lavazza coffee and kombucha to an assortment of sandwiches and salads – all of which can be had in the lounge or on a takeout basis. Travelers who choose to stay will have access to free Wi-Fi and Press Reader's digital library of newspapers and magazines. “Air Canada is growing and rather than simply open a second lounge that mimics what we have, we wondered what a different concept would look like,” said Andrew Yiu, VP Product, Air Canada.
