Spirit Airlines CEO Unveils Two Seating Products During Keynote

During his keynote address, Spirit Airlines CEO and president Ted Christie unveiled two new seating products: Big Front Seats and new economy-class seats. Spirit’s updated Big Front Seats, manufactured by HAECO Cabin Solutions, will come in a 2-2 configuration and feature an ergonomically designed headrest, memory foam and new Spirit branding. Spirit’s new economy seats, manufactured by Acro Aircraft Seating, provide an additional inch of seat pitch, while the middle seat benefits from an extra inch of width compared to window and aisle seats. Installation of the new seats will begin in November.

Safran Announces Customers for RAVE Ultra With 4K Displays and Cabin-Wide Bluetooth Audio

Safran Passenger Innovations unveiled an industry first: enabling all passengers on an aircraft to simultaneously connect their Bluetooth audio headphones to an in-flight entertainment (IFE) system. Previously, Bluetooth IFE connectivity was only available to up to 20 passengers at a time. The IFE supplier also announced it secured two new airline customers for its RAVE Ultra IFE system. Lufthansa will linefit the system in four configurations with different sizes of seatback displays on board 34 forthcoming Boeing 777-9s, while All Nippon Airways will retrofit the hardware on 11 Boeing 787-8s that operate on domestic flights within Japan.

More Airlines Join the Movement to Meet the UN's Sustainable Development Goals

During an APEX EXPO keynote, Hua Jiang, the United Nations’ director of the News and Media Division, Department of Global Communications, called on airlines to take a more concerted stance to achieve the organization’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). “Climate change is a very real threat causing extreme weather events taking countries’ lives. People are desperate for help and the SDGs are the answer,” said Jiang. Xiamen Airlines chairman Zhao Dong provided updates on the airline’s sustainability progress after being the world’s first carrier to support the UN’s SDGs two years ago. Following Dong’s keynote address, Etihad Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Aeroméxico announced they would collaborate with the UN on the SDGs.

Gogo Partners With APSATCOM to Bring 2Ku In-Flight Connectivity to China

Gogo announced a partnership with APSATCOM with the aim of bringing 2Ku satellite in-flight connectivity (IFC) to airlines in China. Under the agreement, Gogo will use APSATCOM's Ku-band network to provide what it claims will be the “fastest in-flight Wi-Fi solution within China” for domestic and international airlines. APSATCOM's network includes both wide-beam satellites and high-throughput satellites and will provide Gogo with 100% coverage over China for IFC by the mid-2020s.

Kontron Signs IFEC Hardware Deal With “Major European Airline”

Kontron revealed it signed a contract with an undisclosed “major European airline” to supply integrated in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) equipment. The hardware will be installed on the airline’s fleet of more than 100 Boeing aircraft in time for its 2020 spring and summer schedule. As part of the deal, Kontron is supplying its ACE Flight 4608 avionics server, Cab-n-Connect A100 cabin wireless access point and ACE Flight removable storage drives. Kontron said the systems are intended to give the airline the necessary platforms to deliver wireless IFE and streaming video-on-demand and games.

Inmarsat and LSE Conclude Sky High Economics Research Study

Frequent flyer loyalty is up for grabs, as 450 million less-engaged passengers will change travel plans to fly with an airline that has superior in-flight connectivity. That’s one of the conclusions of the final chapter of Sky High Economics, the three-part research study from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in association with Inmarsat, that was released yesterday. “This is not something hypothetical in the future, this is something that could be actionable in the very short term,” said Philip Balaam, president, Inmarsat Aviation, in an interview with APEX Media.

CellPoint Digital and UATP to Launch Apple Pay on Board Southwest Airlines

CellPoint Digital and UATP, an airline-owned payment network, entered into a multiyear agreement with Southwest Airlines to allow the carrier to accept Apple Pay transactions from customers. “The launch of Apple Pay enhances our ability to sell flights, as well as ancillary products using one of the most widely used digital wallets in North America,” said Christopher Priebe, director of Treasury, Payments and Risk at Southwest Airlines. Kristian Gjerding, CEO of CellPoint Digital, said the deal provides Southwest with “unique solution that enables airlines to fast-track the launch of alternative forms of payment with minimal development on their side.”
