Virgin Atlantic Wants to Challenge IAG’s Heathrow Dominance

Virgin Atlantic revealed plans to significantly expand its network of routes departing from London’s Heathrow Airport. The airline aims to challenge IAG’s “stranglehold” by serving 84 new destinations in the UK and abroad once a third runway has been built, which is scheduled for completion in 2026. The proposal would mean more choice and lower fares, but would depend on the UK government reforming the existing slot allocation system so the airline could compete on 26 of the 77 routes operated exclusively by IAG. Virgin said ministers should grasp a “once-in-a-generation opportunity to shake up the Heathrow market.”
