Does BA’s Virtual A350 Club Suite Reveal a Future for How Airlines Use VR?

Neutral Digital is exploring new areas of an airline’s passenger and crew experiences to bring into virtual reality, including seat interactions in CGI for travelers and training facilities for staff. The company most recently worked with British Airways on a virtual visualization of its Airbus A350 Club Suite to entice travelers to upgrade their seat. According to Neutral Digital growth strategist Dan Bambridge, VR fills the gap between when something is a concept and an actual product. “When you don’t have any sort of physical mockup, then building something in VR allows you to experience what it’s going to feel like before it actually exists,” he said.

“Flight Shame” Movement Could Cut Future Passenger Air Traffic Growth

Expected growth in passenger numbers could be halved because travelers are beginning to turn their backs on air travel due to environmental concerns, according to a study by Swiss bank UBS. One in five of the 6,000 people (21%) surveyed had cut the number of flights they took over the last year because of aviation’s environmental impact. UBS estimates such a trend could reduce the number of smaller aircraft that airlines order from Airbus and Boeing by 110 each year.

FRA Tests Self-Guiding, Luggage-Holding Robot

Italian manufacturer e-Novia’s self-guiding robot, Your Autonomous Pony Express (YAPE), has undergone a five-day trial at Frankfurt Airport. Passengers interacted with YAPE using a smartphone app before placing their cabin bags in the robot’s luggage compartment and letting it guide them to their gates using an integrated navigation system. In the next phase, e-Novia says YAPE will interact autonomously with passengers. The trial is a result of airport operator Fraport testing new ways to improve the passenger experience while reducing staff workload.
