WTO Grants Permission for US to Impose 10% Tariff on European Aircraft Imports

The US plans to begin imposing tariffs on aircraft manufactured in Europe after the World Trade Organization granted permission to tax up to $7.5 billion of European exports annually. Starting October 18, US trade officials said the tariffs would be set at a 10% rate for aircraft and 25% on agricultural and other items. The US first filed a case at the WTO in 2004, arguing that cheap European loans to Airbus were tantamount to illegal state subsidies. US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said he expected the US to "enter into negotiations with the European Union aimed at resolving this issue in a way that will benefit American workers."
