SWISS Briefly Grounds A220s Following Engine Failure

SWISS briefly grounded its Airbus A220 fleet on Tuesday following an engine failure during a Geneva-bound flight, resulting in 100 flight cancellations. This is the third incident SWISS has encountered with the Pratt & Whitney engines on its A220 fleet in as many months, and occurred just hours after France’s BEA agency launched an appeal for volunteers to search woodland in Eastern France for a titanium engine part from the first blowout in July. Airbus said it is working with Pratt & Whitney and would cooperate with any investigation.

Etihad and Air Arabia Launch New LCC

Etihad Aviation Group and Air Arabia have signed an agreement to launch a low-cost carrier, with Abu Dhabi International Airport as its hub. The two will establish an independent joint venture company that will operate as “Air Arabia Abu Dhabi,” and nominate members to its board of directors to steer the company’s strategy and business mandate. Tony Douglas, Group CEO of Etihad Aviation Group, said, “This exciting partnership supports our transformation program and will offer our guests a new option for low-cost travel to and from Abu Dhabi, supplementing our own services.”

Air New Zealand to Introduce Economy Stretch

Air New Zealand plans to offer a new seating product, Economy Stretch, on 29 of its wide-body aircraft by late 2020. The carrier said each aircraft will have up to 42 of the new  seats in a “stretch zone” located at the front of the economy-class cabin, offering passengers 35 inches of seat pitch, compared to 31 inches in Standard Economy. Air New Zealand said passengers traveling in Economy Stretch can also expect a premium headset and plush pillow.

Red Alert: STG Aerospace Launches Latest Aircraft Floor Lighting

STG Aerospace revealed the newest generation of its saf-Tglo floor path marking system, dubbed SSUL-X, at MRO Europe 2019 this week. The product comes in over 300 colors to match airline brands and can blend in with the pattern of the existing flooring or carpet. The glowing colors show as green, blue and, for the first time, red.

Royal Air Maroc Begins Wireless IFE Trial With

Royal Air Maroc is testing a wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) solution from on one of its Embraer E190 aircraft. Accessed through the airline’s “GO” IFE portal, the solution provides passengers with complimentary content from Fox Non-Theatrical and Euronews, among other sources, as well as destination-specific deals. While a connected version of the IFE system is available, Royal Air Maroc is currently only testing the offline solution. Embraer’s New E195-E2 to Help Airlines Achieve Better Fuel Efficiency

APEX Media visited Embraer’s American corporate offices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to take a closer look at the OEM’s E195-E2 single-aisle aircraft, the first of which was delivered to Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras in September. Nicknamed the “Profit Hunter,” it has an unprecedented level of fuel efficiency, achieved by innovations ranging from the engine to the landing gear, wings and stabilizer. The result is what Embraer chief commercial officer Arjan Meijer described as “the world’s quietest, cleanest and most efficient single-aisle aircraft.”

SunExpress Builds Virtual Reality Partnership With LEGO

Inflight VR partnered with Pico Interactive and Lasker Cross Media to offer SunExpress customers a LEGO-branded in-flight virtual reality experience, which launched last month. In addition to watching LEGO City VR movies using a VR headset, passengers can take home a magazine that unfolds into a poster. “This collaboration will immerse passengers into some jaw-dropping or incredibly relaxing experiences and deepen their relationship with the brands of LEGO and SunExpress,” said Moritz Engler, founder and CEO of Inflight VR.
