Boeing Commercial Aircraft Appoints New CEO

Boeing announced yesterday that Stan Deal is succeeding Kevin McAllister as president and chief executive officer of Boeing Commercial Aircraft, effective immediately. Deal was previously president and CEO of Boeing Global Services. The news follows the recent announcement that Dennis Muilenburg will remain Boeing’s CEO, but no longer occupy the role of chairman. On the most recent changes, the new chairman Dave Calhoun commented, “Boeing will emerge stronger than ever from its current challenges and the changes we're making throughout Boeing will benefit the flying public well into the future.”

Beam-Switching Test Records Next-Level In-Flight Wi-Fi

SES, Thales and Thinkom have demonstrated low-latency, high-throughput in-flight connectivity by switching seamlessly between SES’s geostationary (GEO) and O3b medium-earth orbit (MEO) satellite beams. Engineers on board the aircraft, which was equipped with the Thales FlytLIVE connectivity solution and ThinKom’s Ka2517 phased-array airborne antenna, recorded throughput in excess of 265 Mbps. The connection enabled 4K video streaming, super-fast social media networking, e-commerce transactions, audio conferencing, interactive gaming and web browsing.

PriestmanGoode Exhibition Offers Eco Alternatives to In-Flight Plastics

An exhibition created by PriestmanGoode that highlights alternative solutions to single-use plastics in the airline cabin is currently being showcased at London’s Design Museum. The exhibition covers four key areas: the meal tray in economy class, water consumption during flights, amenities provided to passengers and material innovations. PriestmanGoode decided to research the topic after learning that each passenger creates about one pound  of single-use plastic waste per flight.

ATPCO Announces Retailing Agreements With Sabre and Amadeus

ATPCO has announced retailing agreements with two of the largest global distribution systems, Sabre and Amadeus, to improve the capabilities of airlines to market their fares and services, while improving the shopping and decision-making experience for passengers. ATPCO’s Routehappy content will be available to Sabre-connected travel agencies and to flight-shopping applications and interfaces powered by Amadeus across its global distribution system. “The tipping point for modernizing flight shopping at scale is finally here,” said Robert Albert, EVP Retailing at ATPCO. “Over the next five years, world-class airline retailing will become the norm.”

[PHOTOS] Milan Says “Buongiorno” to Etihad’s New Amenities and Daily Dreamliner Service

In celebration of Etihad Airways' recent deployment of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on its daily flight to Milan and its new amenity kits by Acqua di Parma, the airline hosted a reception at the Palazzo Clerici, located in the center of the Italian city. The new Dreamliners, which began servicing the route last month, feature 28 Business Studios and 271 Economy Smart Seats, and will soon be among the first in the airline's fleet to feature its new Economy Space seating. Milan became Etihad's first Italian destination when it began offering flights to the city in 2007, and continues to represent an important market for the Middle Eastern carrier.

SmartSky Networks Teams With IATA to Tackle Turbulence

SmartSky Networks announced today it is collaborating with the International Air Transport Association to bring its Turbulence Aware solution to business aviation. The cloud database, which is already being used by commercial airlines, collects anonymized reports from thousands of flights to identify areas of turbulence, enabling flight crew to take action accordingly. “The IATA-SmartSky Networks partnership represents an important milestone in our global Turbulence Aware initiative, whose number of participating airlines is growing every week and as we broaden the scope to also include business aviation,” said Katya Vashchankova, head of Meteorological Program for IATA.

Air New Zealand Swaps London for New York

Air New Zealand is set to cancel its flights between Auckland and London via LAX in October 2020 after nearly forty years of service, severing its only link to Europe. Jeff McDowall, Air New Zealand’s CEO, explained, “Today, Kiwis have more than twice the number of ways to fly to London than a decade ago and preferences have changed. Less than seven percent of all airline travelers between Auckland and London chose to fly via Los Angeles last year.” In its place, the carrier will operate a nonstop service between Auckland and New York’s Newark Airport in conjunction with United Airlines.
