Gogo Leases HTS Bandwidth on Eutelsat 10B

Gogo has leased HTS bandwidth on Eutelsat Communications’ Eutelsat 10B satellite, which is set to launch in 2022. The multiyear agreement will see Gogo leverage the capacity across Europe and the Middle East. “We are advancing capacity capabilities given the growing demand for high-speed in-flight connectivity services," said Oakleigh Thorne, president and CEO of Gogo. “Through our partnership with Eutelsat, Gogo 2Ku will continue to enable the best passenger experience for global airlines.”

IndiGo Orders 300 A320neo Family Aircraft

IndiGo has placed a firm order for 300 A320neo family aircraft, comprising a mix of A320neos, A321neos and A321XLRs. The order marks one of Airbus’ largest from a single airline customer and takes IndiGo’s A320neo family aircraft orders to 730 in total. The carrier took delivery of its first A320neo in March 2016 and now operates the world’s largest fleet of the type, with ­97 currently in service alongside 128 A320ceos.

Gilat and China Satcom Expand Strategic Partnership

Gilat Satellite Networks and China Satcom are strengthening their existing strategic partnership. Together, they will enable and deploy Gilat’s DVB-S2X technologies throughout China with a view to providing advanced satellite communication services for the air, land and maritime markets. Sydney Airport Tests CT Scanners to Speed Up Security Screening

After Smiths Detection’s CT technology reduced security screening time by 50% at Melbourne Airport, Sydney Airport (SYD) is testing the technology for both carry-on and checked luggage. SYD recently completed a trial of Smith’s HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX, which allows travelers to keep their electronic devices and liquids in their bags, and is now testing the company’s HI-SCAN 10080 XCT for checked bags.

TAP Air Portugal Gives Customers a SeatBoost

TAP Air Portugal has become the first European airline to allow customers to use SeatBoost to upgrade to business class. Travelers can bid for an upgrade in real time via the app, from 24 hours to 60 minutes before their flight. Auctions can be monitored live in the app, which is available for both iOS and Android devices.

Cathay Pacific Revamps Economy-Class Dining

Cathay Pacific is collaborating with Black Sheep Restaurants to revamp the dining experience in economy class. From November, its long-haul passengers will experience a new menu with appetizers such as shredded chicken and cabbage salad with nuoc cham dressing, and bean salad with chipotle aioli and BBQ chicken; and main courses including braised beef in red wine with green beans and lemon gremolata, and Mexican pulled pork with spice roasted pumpkin and brown rice. The new menus will be rotated regularly and extended to Cathay Pacific’s regional routes at a later date.

Emirates Flight Catering Cuts Down on Cardboard Waste

Emirates Flight Catering (EKFC) has begun transporting its 100,000 daily in-flight meals with reusable crates instead of cardboard packaging. The company estimates the change will save 750 metric tons of cardboard waste per year­ – the equivalent of 65 acres of mature woodland. EKFC’s CEO, Saeed Mohammed, said, “In addition to our vertical farming and solar power projects, our new packaging solution is already the third key initiative we have launched in a year to reduce our environmental footprint and deliver more value for our stakeholders."
