Qantas Becomes Latest Airline to Ground Boeing 737 NG

Qantas has grounded one of its Boeing 737 NGs after discovering cracking on the aircraft, which had made fewer than 27,000 flights. Up to 50 Boeing 737 NGs have been grounded by airlines worldwide due to issues with the aircraft’s “pickle fork,” a part that helps bind the wing to the fuselage. The groundings follow an order by the Federal Aviation Administration for operators to inspect 737 NG aircraft that have flown over 30,000 times for “cracking” after Boeing reported the problem. An engineer’s union has called for Qantas to ground its 737 NG fleet until all inspections are complete, which the airline said was “completely irresponsible.”
