Turkish Expands In-Flight Wi-Fi Commitment With Global Eagle Deal

Turkish Airlines will retrofit more than 100 of its Boeing 737NG and Airbus A321 aircraft with Global Eagle’s Airconnect Ku-band in-flight Wi-Fi solution in a deal announced this week. The integration and installation work will be handled by Turkish Technic and delivered in partnership with local telecommunications company Profen to ensure regulatory requirements are met. Installations are scheduled to begin in late 2020.

Airbus and China Expand Industrial Cooperation

Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury and He Lifeng, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of China, have signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing regarding further industrial cooperation between Airbus and China. In 2021, Airbus aims to reach a monthly global production rate of 63 A320 family aircraft. To help achieve this, Tianjin’s A320 family final assembly line is on track to produce six per month by 2020, marking a 50 percent increase in its initial production capacity. A350 XWB production capabilities will also be extended into the Airbus Tianjin wide-body completion and delivery centre from the second half of 2020.

Cathay Dragon’s A321neos Will Feature New Business-Class Seat

In the first half of 2020, Cathay Pacific will begin overhauling its regional services by introducing the first of 16 Airbus A321neos to its Cathay Dragon subsidiary. The aircraft will feature a new regional business-class seat, which is expected to follow a similar design as the airline's current reclinable offering, rather than a lie-flat seat. A further 16 A321neos will be delivered to Cathay Pacific Group’s low-cost carrier, HK Express, between 2022 and 2024.

Qatar Airways Inks Codeshare Agreement With IndiGo

IndiGo has signed a one-way codeshare agreement with Qatar Airways, which will see Qatar’s airline code and flight numbers introduced on select IndiGo routes. India has not increased the capacity rights available to Qatari carriers since 2009, so the deal helps Qatar Airways bypass restrictions on adding more flights. The airline’s CEO Akbar Al Baker has long talked about making an investment in IndiGo. “We are very keen to take a stake in IndiGo, but I don’t think this is the right time to talk about it,” he commented.

British Airways Reopens Refurbished Johannesburg Lounge

British Airways has converted its business- and first-class lounges at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International into a single space with a dedicated dining area for first-class customers. The lounge can accommodate up to 247 passengers and features a lobby bar, brasserie dining areas, an area with armchairs and banquette seating and a business zone. Lighting in the lounge has been planned by zone and is dimmable to reflect the time of day. British Airways is also planning to invest in its lounges in Geneva, Chicago and London Heathrow.

SITA Acquires Italian Airport IT Service Provider

SITA has acquired 100 percent of Software Design, the main IT service provider for Naples International Airport (NAP). The move comes as a result of SITA experiencing a growing demand for its airport-specific integration capabilities. The 70-strong Software Design team will continue to operate from (NAP), with SITA leading an investment and transformation program to strengthen the team’s capability and grow its presence across airports in Europe. NAP, one of the fastest growing airports in Italy, will also benefit from SITA’s experience in passenger and baggage processing, border management and airport operations.

Aer Lingus Launches Festive Onboard Menu

The Aer Lingus winter magazine features festive new in-flight food and beverage options that will be available for purchase until January 2020. The “Christmas Feast” is a sandwich on extra-thick malt bread filled with pulled turkey, herb stuffing, cranberry sauce, mayonnaise and baby spinach; while the “Christmas Veggie Croque” is comprised of brie, cranberry, spinach and herb stuffing on cranberry and pumpkin cheese-topped sourdough bread. Aer Lingus has also introduced an artisan pastry sausage roll, made in Dublin, to its hot food menu.
