TAP Begins Flying With Sensor-Equipped Recaro iSeats

Several of Recaro Aircraft Seating’s BL3530 iSeats, which are equipped with sensors, are currently in operation on a TAP Air Portugal Airbus A321 aircraft. The sensors gather data on seat performance and generic behavior during flight, such as if the seat is occupied; how many times a passenger uses the tray table, raises the armrests or reclines the seat; and whether the seatbelt is fastened. The first commercial flight equipped with the iSeats took place on September 26, and the first data collection occurred on October 24.

Deezer Creates Exclusive Playlists for Emirates

Music editors at global music streaming service Deezer have crafted over 20 playlists exclusively for Emirates passengers. Accessible via Emirates’ ice in-flight entertainment system, Deezer said the playlists feature a mix of international artists and will appeal to a wide range of tastes. Patrick Brannelly, Emirates’ divisional vice-president of Customer Experience, IFEC, commented, “Emirates has supported the industry for many years by working with artists and record labels. Now we are pleased to be building relationships with music streaming services.”

Global Eagle Places $5M Order for Wavestream IFC Transceivers

Global Eagle has placed an order worth approximately $5 million for Ku-band high-power transceivers (HPTs) from Gilat Satellite Networks subsidiary Wavestream to support its in-flight connectivity solutions. Mike Piggot, Global Eagle’s SVP, Connectivity, said, “Wavestream is a longtime partner of Global Eagle and a reliable HPT supplier for our in-flight entertainment content, connectivity and digital media solutions.” The Wavestream HPT is linefit on Boeing 737 aircraft and has logged over 20 million flight hours to date.

Japanese Airlines Ramp Up Ahead of Summer Olympics

Japan’s airlines are ramping up international routes in anticipation of the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will take place in Tokyo. In anticipation of the increased traffic, aircraft will be able to fly over central Tokyo during the day, for the first time ever. At FTE APEX ASIA EXPO this week, Japan Airlines, Zipair and Peach presented their strategies for accommodating the estimated 57 million passengers who will fly to Tokyo’s airports in 2020, and how they plan to differentiate their service offerings.

SWISS Integrates Carbon Offsetting Platform Into Booking Process

Compensaid, the carbon offsetting platform developed by Lufthansa Innovation Hub, has been introduced to SWISS’ online reservations portal following a successful trial phase. The platform calculates the difference in price between the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the fossil fuel required for a passengers’ journey, and allows the passenger to pay this amount. Then, within six months, Lufthansa Group’s Fuel Management unit will feed the equivalent volume of SAF into its flight operations. Alternatively, passengers can use Compensaid to contribute to the myclimate foundation, which finances climate protection projects.

Southwest Launches Dual Boarding at SMF

Southwest Airlines has introduced dual boarding and deplaning as standard procedure at Sacramento International Airport and is testing the process at other airports in a bid to shorten turnaround times. Passengers using the front door of Southwest’s Boeing 737s typically use a jet bridge, whereas those now using the rear door walk down a flight of stairs and across the tarmac. As the carrier does not offer reserved seating, a number of passengers can now opt to board via the rear door to secure space in the overhead bins.

EVA Air Introduces New Amenity Kits and Sleepwear

EVA Air is rolling out new amenity kits for business- and premium economy-class passengers on long-haul flights to and from Taipei. Business-class passengers will receive a second-generation version of both EVA Air’s amenity kit, created in partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo, and its sleepwear, designed by Jason Wu. Outbound premium economy-class passengers will receive amenity kits from Kipling – marking the first time the Belgian fashion brand has worked with an airline – while inbound passengers will be treated to a second-generation version of EVA Air’s amenity kit with Italian brand Furla.
