Inmarsat Successfully Launches GX5 Satellite

Following two delays due to a power supply issue with the launch vehicle and then unfavorable weather conditions, Inmarsat has confirmed the successful launch of GX5, the fifth satellite in its Global Xpress (GX) fleet. Built by Thales Alenia Space and lifted into orbit by Arianespace in Kourou, French Guiana, the satellite is due to enter commercial service in early 2020. Before then, launch teams from Inmarsat and Thales Alenia Space will raise its orbit to geostationary altitude, (approximately 22,400 miles above the Earth), deploy its solar panels and antenna reflectors and carry out all the necessary testing and calibration.

Boeing 737 Max Re-Certification Likely Postponed Until 2020

Following yesterday’s announcement that the FAA will take over all certification aspects for the grounded Boeing 737 Max, even after it re-enters service, The Air Current has reported that officials say it is unlikely that will happen before 2020. Although there remains a slight chance that the aircraft may be operating in the United States again by the end of the year, officials say there are still too many outstanding items to complete re-certification, including the certifications to change the flight control software, the FAA Flight Standardization Board Report and the Joint Operation Evaluation Board simulator trials.

LSG Group’s European Business Sold to Gategroup

Lufthansa is to sell the European side of its catering business, LSG Group, to Gategroup for an undisclosed price. In a statement, Lufthansa commented, “The sale is part of Lufthansa’s new strategy to focus on its airline business.” Sources have said the sale will be followed by an auction for LSG Group’s international business in the first quarter of 2020. Earlier this year, Lufthansa’s CEO, Carsten Spohr, said LSG Group was being challenged by the large number of locations it serves, high staff costs and currency exchange rates.

KLM Cityhopper Chooses Recaro Seats for E195-E2s

KLM Cityhopper has chosen to equip its incoming 21 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft with 132 seats in a hybrid layout consisting of Recaro Aircraft Seating’s BL3710 and SL3710 products. According to Recaro, the ergonomically optimized SL3710, which weighs eight kilograms, is a popular choice for regional airlines as it reduces fuel costs without sacrificing passenger comfort. The BL3710 allows airlines to choose from a range of enhancements including armrests, upholstery and storage options. KLM Cityhopper’s first E195-E2 is scheduled for delivery during the first quarter of 2021.

Norwegian Axes Some Scandinavian Long-Haul Routes

Norwegian has decided to end all long-haul flights from Denmark and Sweden to the US and Thailand. Flights will continue to operate between Oslo and the US, but services between Oslo and Thailand could also be cut. Matthew Wood, Norwegian’s senior vice-president of Commercial, said, “Scandinavia isn’t big enough to maintain intercontinental flights from Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen.” However, Wood also blamed ongoing issues with its Boeing 787 engines. He stated, “We have been struggling with the Rolls-Royce engines on our long-distance aircraft, which means we need to keep more planes on the ground. This affects our route schedule.”
