Boeing Considers Cutting or Halting 737 MAX Production

Boeing is considering cutting or halting production of its 737 MAX after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said last week it would not approve the plane’s return to service before 2020, according to an unnamed source. FAA Administrator Steve Dickson has said there are nearly a dozen milestones that must be completed before the aircraft returns to service, and US officials told Reuters that FAA approval is not likely until at least February. Boeing said in a statement that it “will continue to assess production decisions based on the timing and conditions of return to service, which will be based on regulatory approvals and may vary by jurisdiction.”

Hong Kong’s Airport Authority Seizes Seven HKA Aircraft

Airport Authority Hong Kong has confirmed that it has seized seven of Hong Kong Airlines’ (HKA) aircraft at Hong Kong International Airport “in order to protect financial interests.” HKA said, “Due to network consolidation, some of our aircraft have not been scheduled for operation and are currently suspended from service under the Airport Authority’s arrangement. Our current operation remains normal.” The carrier was recently reported to be on the brink of collapse due to its rapidly deteriorating finances, but two weeks ago announced details of a cash injection plan.

Onex Corporation Completes WestJet Buyout

After proposing to lead a buyout in May this year, Toronto-based Onex Corporation has completed its purchase of WestJet Airlines for $3.8 billion, including the carrier’s debt. Onex said WestJet shareholders will receive $23.56 per share, but won’t receive a quarterly dividend of 11 cents per share at the end of this month, as previously declared. FlightGlobal believes the change in ownership will bolster WestJet’s plans to expand its network of international routes.

OneWeb to Launch Program to Remove Space Debris

OneWeb and One Web satellites, a joint venture between Airbus and OneWeb, are collaborating on a program to install grappling fixtures on their satellites to avoid space-debris buildup. Developed by Altius, the technology enables different capture techniques that can be used to deorbit a satellite if needed. OneWeb views space as a shared natural resource and believes, “It is critical we do all we can to employ responsible design and operational practices to ensure a sustainable environment for future generations,” said Tim Maclay, OneWeb director of Mission Systems Engineering.

Heineken Expands KLM Partnership With New Crown Lounge Bar

Heineken has introduced a premium bar experience within KLM’s new non-Schengen Crown Lounge at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The space features one bar offering passengers views of seven famous Dutch paintings while they sip on complimentary Heineken or Heineken 0.0 beverages, and another with a wider selection of beers and ciders from the Heineken global portfolio available for purchase. There is also a space dedicated to Heineken activations based on the brand’s various sponsorships.

Recaro Breaks Ground on Expansion of Headquarters

Recaro Aircraft Seating has begun construction on the $45-million expansion of its headquarters in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. The project will include a new customer service area, designed to improve operational processes by connecting all production, administration and logistic areas. The new buildings, which are expected to be completed in the summer of 2021, will also feature flame- and crash-test facilities.

SITA to Install 105 Scan&Fly Units at Airports for LATAM Airlines Group

A new agreement with LATAM Airlines Group will see SITA install its Scan&Fly self-service bag-drop solution at 18 airports across five countries. Eight kiosks are already in operation at Brasilia International Airport, and a remaining 97 units are due to be gradually implemented at other locations in the coming months. Edwin Garcia, director of Airport Operations, LATAM Airlines Group, said, “Our passengers want more automation because it gives them more control over their journeys and cuts waiting times. It also means a more efficient airport – freeing up our team members so they can dedicate their time to help passengers.”
