Bek Air Crash Kills 12 in Kazakhstan

On December 27, a Fokker 100 aircraft operated by Bek Air crashed moments after taking off from Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, killing 12 of the 98 people on board and injuring over 60. According to Kazakhstan’s civil aviation committee, the aircraft had “lost altitude during takeoff and broke through a concrete fence” before hitting a small building. The committee said it was suspending all Fokker 100 flights pending an investigation, while Kazakhstan’s president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, tweeted that those responsible would “be severely punished in accordance with the law.”

Aegean Airlines has submitted a non-binding bid to acquire fellow Star Alliance member Croatian Airlines, which is wholly owned by the Croatian government. As an airline registered in the EU, Aegean can purchase a majority stake in the carrier. Next, the Croatian government is expected to announce a tender for binding bids and disclose the number of shares it is willing to sell, which could amount to a stake of up to 70%. Aegean participated in an attempt to privatize Croatian Airlines back in 2015 before a change in government halted the process.
