LG Unveils Flexible In-Cabin OLED Wall Screens

LG will showcase a new kind of in-flight entertainment screen at  the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next week. The flexible 55-inch OLED displays form part of the cabin structure, displaying scenery on the walls  to make passengers “feel more openness” during their flight, the company said. Passengers in first class can benefit from LG’s larger 65-inch Ultra HD Bendable OLED displays that can be adjusted to suit various applications, including gaming and movies. LG also touted a screen that doubles as a privacy partition, offering 40 percent transparency when not in use. Facial Recognition Software Exhibits Racial Bias, Study Finds

A study conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology found that facial recognition algorithms are less adept at identifying minorities. Researchers evaluated 189 algorithms from 99 manufacturers and found that Asian and black faces resulted in a higher rate of false positives, meaning the software wrongly considered photos of two different individuals to show the same person. Mark Howell, a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which has been testing facial recognition software at several US airports, said, "TSA understands the variety of concerns related to facial recognition match performance and takes this issue seriously."

Delta Completes Acquisition of 20% Stake in LATAM

Following the announcement of a strategic partnership with LATAM in September 2019, Delta Air Lines has completed the acquisition of a 20% stake in LATAM Airlines Group  for $1.9 billion. Alongside a commercial joint venture with LATAM, the acquisition aligns with Delta’s long-term plan to make equity investments in key airline partners around the globe. In December 2019, Delta and LATAM announced an initial codeshare agreement, including Delta's North American routes and LATAM’s routes in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, which will begin during the first quarter of 2020, subject to regulatory approvals.

British Airways to Offset Carbon Emissions on All UK Flights

From January 1 onwards, all flights between the 10 UK cities served by British Airways will be carbon neutral. The airline plans to invest in various carbon reduction projects, including reforestation, renewable energy and rainforest protection. British Airways has also partnered with Velocys to build a plant that converts household and commercial waste into sustainable jet fuel, as part of the airline’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Turkish Airlines Agrees to 737 MAX Compensation Deal

Turkish Airlines has agreed to a compensation deal with Boeing over the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX following two fatal crashes. While the carrier did not specify what the deal is worth, Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported that it amounts to $225 million ($150 million in compensation and $75 million to cover things like spare parts and training). Turkish Airlines had taken delivery of 12 of the 75 737 MAX aircraft it had on order before it was grounded and was supposed to have received 12 more since. News of the compensation follows a similar deal made between Boeing and Southwest Airlines.

Air New Zealand’s Skycouch Remains a Family Favorite

Air New Zealand’s Economy Skycouch, manufactured by Recaro Aircraft Seating, entered into service in 2011. Since then, it has garnered a string of awards, including a recent APEX Award for Best Product or Service after being enhanced with an infant harness, belt and pod, allowing infants to remain lying down when the seatbelt sign is on. Air New Zealand also updated its Skycouch Cuddle Belt, which was previously certified to allow two adults or an adult and child to lie side by side, to accommodate two children. The solution has been licensed to multiple carriers operating on non-competing routes.

Emirates Celebrates Its 2019 IFEC Achievements

In a roundup of its achievements for 2019, Emirates reported that it had logged 13 million connections to its in-flight connectivity service throughout the year and revealed that offering Wi-Fi to passengers on board costs the airline $27 million annually. Elsewhere, Emirates said over 180,000 unique playlists have been created since it introduced the option for passengers to browse and compile content ahead of their flight, before using the Emirates app to sync their playlists to their seats once on board. “We’ve … stayed focused on delivering our “fly better” promise to customers through enhancing our product and service proposition at every touchpoint,” said Emirates’ CEO, Tim Clark.
