Seamless Air Alliance Introduces Open In-Flight Connectivity Standards

The Seamless Air Alliance has created a modular platform for in-flight connectivity with the goal of allowing suppliers to deliver components directly to an airline, rather than going through a connectivity vendor, as long as they comply with the Seamless Release 1 (SR1) standards. APEX Media spoke with CEO Jack Mandala about why SR1 represents a real step change for the industry and how it complements the work being done by the APEX Connectivity Working Group.

Coronavirus Leads to More Capacity Cuts for Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific increased its predicted reduction in capacity over the coming weeks from 30% to 40% as a result of a substantial drop in travel demand amid the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The cuts will likely extend into the month of April. Earlier this month, the airline suspended its flights to London Gatwick, Rome, Washington DC, Newark, Male, Davao, Clark, Jeju and Taichung. Cathay said its financial results for the first half of 2020 will be significantly lower compared to the same period last year. Singapore Airlines also announced a temporary reduction in flights across its global network starting February 24 through May. The coronavirus has infected a total of 73,433 people worldwide and killed 1,866.

Boeing Dedicates $50 Million to Charities Selected by Families of MAX Victims

The remaining half of the $100 million Boeing Community Investment Fund will be allocated to the families of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 victims to enable them to donate to eligible charities of their choosing. Ken Feinberg and Camille Biros were selected to oversee the management of the fund. The pair of attorneys have already made “tremendous progress” with doling out financial assistance directly to families according to Tim Keating, Boeing's executive vice-president of Government Operations. All funds distributed by Feinberg and Biros will be independent of any resolution provided through the legal process.

Virgin Galactic Spaceship Lands in New Mexico

Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity, landed in New Mexico last week. The move completes the company’s relocation to Spaceport America, a facility conceived by Richard Branson and former governor Bill Richardson, which was designed and built specifically for launching commercial passengers and payloads into suborbital space. The captive carry flight to New Mexico provided an opportunity for engineers to evaluate VSS Unity for over three hours at high altitude and cold temperatures. Virgin Galactic can now begin the final stages of flight testing, eventually leading to commercial spaceflight operations.

Air New Zealand Reduced In-Flight Waste by 890 Metric Tons

Air New Zealand’s Project Green works to reuse and recycle 40 types of in-flight service items. Since the program’s launch in 2017, the airline has been able to divert more than 890 metric tons of in-flight waste from landfill. Previously, onboard items such as soft drink cans, packets of cookies, boxed tea, sugar sachets and sealed napkins were thrown out even if untouched. Air New Zealand's general manager of Supply Chain, Chloe Surridge, mentioned the project also helped the airline better assess flight loading requirements to “build sustainability into its supply chain.”
