China and US Officials Allow More Flights Between Nations

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it would allow twice the number of flights from China after the Chinese government approved US airlines to do the same. United Airlines confirmed it will increase service to China to four flights per week starting September 4 on the San Francisco—Shanghai route. The DOT said it would allow additional flights in the future in lockstep with China. Current treaties allow both countries to operate more than 100 weekly flights, but travel between them has been limited since President Trump barred nearly all non-US citizens from traveling to the United States from China on January 31.

APEX Op-Ed: Cultivating Fear Isn’t the Way Forward, Says Founder and CEO of Mormedi

In this first installment of The APEX Op-Ed Series, Jaime Moreno, founder and CEO of Madrid-based design consultancy Mormedi, asks, “If the air travel industry is implementing so many new initiatives to deal with its worst year on record, why are people still afraid to fly?” More effective communication, quickly prototyping and testing new solutions, and providing more agency and control to passengers are what he believes airlines should be doing to inspire confidence.

Heathrow Leads Initiative to Shorten Quarantine

Heathrow Airport revealed plans for a new COVID-19 testing center in which arriving travelers could receive a diagnosis within seven hours. The goal is to shorten the UK-mandated quarantine period for travelers arriving from countries that are not on the country’s safelist, but the British government is not prepared to lend its endorsement to the scheme yet. Collinson and Swissport collaborated with the airport to build the testing facility, which can administer 13,000 tests per day.

PWI’s COVID-19 Solution Neutralizes Virus in Aircraft A/C System

Aero Biotek, the sister organization of cabin lighting company PWI, has developed a device that tackles pathogens as they pass through aircraft ventilation systems. The Biotek Shield uses an ultraviolet-C light to neutralize viruses like H1N1, SARS, West Nile, Tuberculosis and coronavirus, when set at the strongest level recognized by the EPA, which is known as log-6 level. The product will first be designed to fit the A/C system of a Boeing 737. Robi Lorik, president and CEO of PWI, said Biotek Shield was favorable over topical wands or foggers because it offers continuous sanitization.

Boeing Offers More Buyouts, Aligns Company With Current Demand

Boeing plans on shrinking its workforce beyond its April estimate of 10%, citing low market demand and the need to preserve liquidity. It will offer a pay and benefits package to those who opt to leave voluntarily. CEO Dave Calhoun said this would “limit additional involuntary workforce actions.” The cuts will be focused on the company’s commercial airplanes unit, services division and corporate operation. In contrast, the company is increasing the size of its defense and space division by 3,000 employees.
