New Terminal Opens at Bahrain International Airport

A new billion-dollar-terminal opened at Bahrain International Airport today. Covering over 2,200 square feet, it’s more than four times larger than the terminal it replaces. The facility can process up to 14 million travelers per year and features over 100 check-in counters along with e-gates for seamless departures and arrivals. Artwork features prominently throughout the terminal – two large-scale glass art installations overlook the central hub, a cultural heritage museum is located in the departures area and ten marble sculptures are placed across the concourse.

Opinion: Airlines Can Leverage the New Normal to Their Advantage

Patrick Brannelly, SVP Retail, IFE & Connectivity at Emirates, believes that airlines with great products and services will be best positioned to attract increasingly discerning passengers following the pandemic. Existing features of Emirates’ ice in-flight entertainment system have already proven useful: “We introduced a feature in 2003 that allows crew to send text messages to every seat. This has become critical as it allows us to remind passengers to respect health protocols or advise them about new procedures. The seatback survey has also been hugely helpful in monitoring passenger sentiment during this time, as some services have been restricted,” he explained.

Delta Air Lines has received Diamond-level, “hospital-grade” certification following its completion of the APEX Health Safety powered by SimpliFlying audit. “Delta Air Lines has raised the bar for health safety in the industry by doing things like introducing ATP devices to assess surface cleanliness and installing antimicrobial LED lighting above lavatory sinks and countertops, things which are overseen by a dedicated management team,” said SimpliFlying’s CEO, Shashank Nigam. Yesterday, Delta announced it was appointing Dr. Henry Ting as its first chief health officer.

GOL Airlines is now using the software for its fleet of 138 Boeing 737s, while Sky Regional Airlines, which operates under the Air Canada Express banner, integrated the analytics platform across its fleet of 25 Embraer E175 aircraft.

Lufthansa Technik and Aqua Free have developed a water filtration system called PuriFLY that can be retrofitted into existing water filtration systems on nearly all commercial aircraft. It requires less frequent cleaning and filter changes thanks to a separate two-stage filter design that uses both activated carbon and a mechanical filter with extremely small pore diameters. PuriFLY is EASA-certified and is said to remove 99.99999% of germs and bacteria from water.
