Australian Low-Cost Airline Bonza Launches First Flight

Bonza, the first new carrier to launch in Australia in 16 years, took to the skies for its first passenger flight, just four days after opening up bookings to the public. Australia’s newest low-cost airline’s first flight from Sunshine Coast to Whitsundays took off on January 31 with passengers boarding one of three new Boeing 737-MAX 8s that make up the airline’s fleet. The flight is the first of 27 new domestic routes to 17 destinations set to roll out in coming months – 26 of which are not currently serviced by any other airlines.

Norwegian Airline Flyr To File For Bankruptcy

Norwegian airline Flyr has announced that it will file for bankruptcy after failing to raise the money it needed for its operations, becoming the latest aviation casualty since the start of the pandemic. Flyr, which launched in June 2021, acknowledged that weak financial markets and uncertainty about air travel demand had prevented the company from raising more cash. The company had announced last October it would drastically reduce its winter schedule. In the last 6 months, Flybe, SAS and Kulula have also filed for bankruptcy.

Singapore Airlines Launches New Global Brand Campaign

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has launched its latest global brand campaign to reflect the airline’s commitment to deliver an exceptional end-to-end customer experience. Titled ‘Welcome to World Class’, the campaign will run on television, print, digital, out-of-home and social media platforms. The campaign features SIA’s iconic cabin crew in a 90-second campaign video, and highlights their varied and personal experiences with people and cultures from around the world. Directed by filmmaker Liz Murphy, the video was filmed in Singapore, New Zealand, Spain, India and China.

Thailand To Construct USD 9 Billion Aviation City

The Thai government will begin construction on its Bt290 billion (USD 8.82 billion) U-Tapao aviation city in Phla, Thailand, in 2023. The public-private project, named Eastern Aviation City, will have an area of 1,040 hectares. It will include an airport terminal, a free-trade zone for cargo, an aviation training center and aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities. The airport will also feature a smart eco hub retail area and culture village to offer entertainment for all visitors.

ZIPAIR Begins Working With SpaceX For Inflight Internet

Tokyo-based ZIPAIR has announced that it will introduce innovative high-speed internet on its flights in collaboration with SpaceX. The airline is the first in Asia to partner with the aerospace company’s new internet service. ZIPAIR will utilize SpaceX’s low-latency broadband internet system, known as Starlink. Starlink is a satellite-based internet service that uses a network of low-Earth orbit satellites to provide global coverage. The technology is expected to revolutionize the flying experience, and provide passengers with seamless connectivity.

Finnair Modifies A350s To Carry More Customers And Cargo

Finland’s flag carrier Finnair has modified ten of its flagship A350s to carry more customers and cargo. The modifications were completed in early January and operations with the new maximum take-off weight began on 18 January. Finnair says the demand for flights to and from Asia has risen, and the changes were made to Finnair’s aircraft that regularly serve the carrier’s Seoul and Tokyo routes. The airline worked with Airbus to increase the maximum take-off weight for the aircraft, with the modifications involving minor changes and updates to the aircraft software and placards and manuals.

Vilnius Airport Begins Construction Of New Departure Terminal

Vilnius Airport in Lithuania has started construction works on its new departure terminal. The new 14,400m² facility is estimated to double the passenger throughput to 2,400 an hour. Lithuanian Airports representatives said that the terminal will feature innovations to improve operational efficiency and streamline travelers’ experience. Entailing a €41.5m investment, the new terminal is expected to open in early 2025. The new facility will be A++ energy class and ‘BREEAM Good’ certified, showcasing its green approach during construction.
