Pete Buttigieg Inaugurated as US Transportation Secretary

Yesterday, the US Senate confirmed Pete Buttigieg as the head of the US Department of Transportation. Aviation trade groups applauded the news. The 39-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana is the nation’s first openly gay cabinet secretary. President Biden has emphasized the need for a bold infrastructure package, which Buttigieg will spearhead. He has previously specified that he would work to ensure Biden’s mask order is enforced on certain modes of interstate travel, and that he would re-examine the FAA’s safety measures.

Delta Refreshes IFE Slate For First Time During COVID-19

Delta Air Lines has added new movies and TV shows to its in-flight entertainment library for the first time since April of last year, when it was forced to pause new content loads due to the COVID-19 crisis. Over 300 movies and TV shows were curated from studios such as Disney, Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount, Hulu and HBO. Furthermore, the airline focused on celebrating Black History Month by adding documentaries from Black filmmakers that spotlight advocates in the fight for justice and have connections to Atlanta, the airline’s hometown and the birthplace of civil rights.

To further enhance the airline’s smart contactless journey proposition, Emirates customers can now make use of 32 self-service bag drop machines and 16 check-in kiosks at Dubai International Airport (DXB) without physically touching them. The hardware can be controlled by a personal electronic device, and Emirates has added the ability to pay for ancillary purchases in this manner as well. Travelers headed to the US, Canada, China, India and Hong Kong cannot use the service due to additional requirements. Emirates customers can also make use of curb-to-gate biometric checkpoints, and will soon be able to control IFE screens using their personal devices.

JAL’s Distinct New Amenities Range Inspired by Crane Logo

Japan Airlines’ (JAL) new set of amenities and soft products have taken design cues from the carrier’s circular red crane logo known as Tsurumaru. Japanese studio Nendo created cardigans, eye masks, slippers, blankets, tablecloths and other items, all featuring a hint of red inspired by an origami crane. The fold lines of the deconstructed origami appear on menu cards, place settings, serviceware and other dining elements, and create a grid when laid out on a tray. Warm and cool greys dominate the lineup to encourage color-matching across various production centers.
