SITA’s Health Protect Solution to Process Passenger Data Securely

SITA has launched Health Protect, a suite of solutions allowing industry stakeholders to share information on passengers’ health tests or vaccinations securely. Health Protect integrates various digital health passport schemes into SITA’s existing passenger processing systems to minimize the operational impact of new government travel requirements. “We’re excited […] to bridge the gap between airlines resuming normal operations and governments' strong focus on keeping control of COVID-19,” said CEO, Airports and Borders at SITA, David Lavorel. Health Protect has been tested on travelers to the UAE, and another pilot will begin at Milan Malpensa Airport soon.

ACA/IFSA Announce Publication of In-Flight Service Guidelines

The International Flight Services Association (IFSA) and Airline Catering Association (ACA) joined forces to create wide-ranging safety guidelines that airlines, airports and catering companies can reference for free. The ACA/IFSA COVID-19 Guideline document is meant to be a springboard, encouraging stakeholders to adapt their crisis response plans with up-to-date standards sourced from top governing bodies. IFSA’s executive director, Lauren Costello, explained that the guidelines were designed to limit infection of staff, visitors, ‎‎contractors, customers and passengers as much as possible.

Digital Health Passports Continue Rollout Across the Americas

A new partnership between IATA and the government of the Republic of Panama will see Copa Airlines become the first in the Americas to test IATA’s Travel Pass on select routes from its hub in Panama City, starting in March. “Copa Airlines’ extensive network in the region and Panama’s strategic geographic position makes them an ideal candidate to trial the IATA Travel Pass,” said Peter Cerdá, IATA's regional vice-president for the Americas. Meanwhile, American Airlines has announced it will accept passengers’ COVID-19 testing verification via the VeriFLY app at all airports, including domestic, across the US.

Airline Panel Reveal What’s on The Horizon for IFEC

APEX members can now watch a recording of the thought leadership session hosted by the association in conjunction with Viasat last week. The panel expressed confidence in their in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) investments. During a fireside chat, Viasat’s president and CEO Rick Baldridge explained the company will double down on efforts to add spectrum and bandwidth in the long term. Executives from American Airlines, Aeromexico and Viasat also weighed in on innovation, content strategy, usage rates and other key IFEC issues.

Iberia Offers Academic Masterclasses in the Skies

Esade, an educational institution within the Ramon Llull University in Barcelona, is working with Iberia to provide a series of masterclasses that passengers can enjoy via the airline’s in-flight entertainment platform. Courses will be focused on business agility, artificial intelligence, e-commerce and leadership, all in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. The goal is to help travelers learn about the latest tech developments and refine their skills in areas that employers are interested in.

Oneworld Portal Integrates Sherpa Data

Oneworld has enhanced its COVID-related customer portal launched in July 2020 with data provided by travel technology Sherpa to offer passengers information specific to their journey. They can now see government entry restrictions, testing requirements, health documentation and quarantine rules at their destinations. Max Tremaine, Sherpa’s co-founder and CEO, said, “Our product aggregates the most recent updates from thousands of sources such as Government websites, tourism boards and WHO, helping to reduce complexity for travelers.”

Gilat Expands Presence in Peru

The Peruvian Corporation of Commercial Airports and Aviation (CORPAC) awarded Gilat Satellite Networks a multi-million-dollar contract to provide telecom systems for 29 of Peru’s airports, a deal which the company hopes will position it favorably for future business in the country. Gilat will design, supply, implement and commission equipment for core air traffic management services at the airports. “Gilat was selected by CORPAC due to its proven execution capabilities of large-scale government projects,” said Arieh Rohrstock, Corporate VP and General Manager Gilat Peru.
