IATA Revises Break-Even Prediction for Airlines This Year

Airlines will not be cash positive by Q4 this year, according to a revised assessment from IATA. The association predicts carriers will burn between $75 and $95 billion this year as new COVID-19 variants contribute to tightened travel restrictions ahead of the peak northern summer travel season. IATA recommends that governments lay out reopening plans that airlines can reference, that health passports become widely used and global standards regarding vaccination records are adopted.

Astronics Reports Q4 Revenue Bump in 2020

Aerospace electronics corporation Astronics earned nearly 8% more revenue by the end of Q4 last year compared to the third quarter, but CEO Peter J. Gundermann commented that aircraft market conditions remain depressed in the company’s latest financial statement. Total revenue in 2020 was $502.6 million, down 35% year-over-year, and the company suffered a net loss of over $115 million. Gundermann noted that Astronics’ core business was hit hard, but the company is prepared for a recovery and looks forward to improved market conditions once vaccines take hold.

According to Warner Rootliep, managing director at KLM Cityhopper, the Embraer E195-E2 delivered to the carrier yesterday is poised to make a big impact on plans to reduce its carbon footprint by at least 50% per passenger kilometer by 2030. That’s because the next-generation aircraft produces 31% less CO2 compared to its predecessor, the E190, and cuts noise pollution by 60%. KLM Cityhopper operates an all-Embraer fleet; in November 2019 it placed 25 firm orders for this aircraft type with options for 10 more, all via leasing agents.
