Vaccination Campaign Kicks Off at O’Hare

United and American airlines, O'Hare International Airport’s biggest carriers, began vaccinating their employees and contractors yesterday at terminals 2 and 3. Today, personnel will administer vaccinations to the city’s first responders and security workers at the airport Hilton hotel. That site will open up to staff at O’Hare and Midway airports, local transportation agency workers, taxi drivers and rideshare drivers on Monday; up to 2,500 vaccines per week will be administered there over the next two months. All sites will administer the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

SITA Data Breach Affects Star Alliance Frequent Flyer Data

Passenger service systems operated by SITA were victims of a successful cyberattack last month. The company stores basic frequent flyer program data for all 26 Star Alliance airlines, which is needed to enable the verification of membership between carriers and provide benefits during travel. Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Finnair, Air New Zealand and Jeju Air customers may have had their membership numbers, tier status and names exposed. Information such as passwords, credit card details and other personal data was not affected.

Recaro Receives Order from Alaska Airlines

The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft ordered by Alaska Airlines will come equipped with business- and economy-class seats from Recaro. In total, Alaska ordered 13 shipsets of BL3530 and CL4710 seats; the airline was the launch customer of the latter model. Amber Simonsen, director of Product Development & Delivery at Alaska, said that guests appreciate Recaro’s seat features like the adjustable footrest and cup holder in first class, as well as the charging ports and tablet holders in the main cabin. In December, Alaska announced it had purchased 23 737-9 MAX aircraft.

Monster Entertainment is Releasing its First Feature Film

Quick Takes, a new Q&A series, looks to connect content companies with prospects while in-person events are postponed due to COVID-19. In the first instalment, Monster Entertainment chairman Andrew Fitzpatrick said that the company is looking forward to debuting its first feature film, Jungle Beat: The Movie. “It’s a spin-off from the hit non-verbal TV series, which has been hugely popular with airlines,” he explained. “Much of our slate is animation and this has been largely unaffected as artists can work from home.”

Remodeling Complete at UIO

A project aimed at refreshing the departure and arrival halls at Quito International Airport (UIO) is now complete. The $2-million renovation saw the installation of a new Brazilian granite floor, the replacement of all seating with custom furniture and shops repositioned to open up the space. A large tree-like wooden sculpture was also added to the center of the departures hall. Ecuador-based Adriana Hoyos Design Studio said its goal was to create a warm yet memorable experience for travelers.

Global Eagle Adds Women’s Festival Keynotes to Content Library

Content that celebrates women and girls is now available to Global Eagle’s airline customers. Inspirational speeches by broadcaster Emma Dabiri, author and social media figure Layla Saad, and feminist activist and journalist Caroline Criado-Perez are now on the content menu thanks to a collaboration with the Women of the World Festival (WOW) 2020. “I am delighted to support the foundation in spreading awareness of WOW Festivals and the fantastic speakers they attract,” said Terri Davies, SVP, Global Eagle. “We hope to extend our partnership with The WOW Foundation to continue to provide our clients with engaging and empowering content.”

Volocopter Banks $241M in Latest Funding Round

A Series D investment round has netted Volocopter $241 million from a mix of backers, including infrastructure company Atlantia and automotive parts company Continental. “Many of our strategic partners will support us on different aspects of the supply chain,” said Rene Griemens, Volocopter’s CFO. CEO Florian Reuter said the company’s biggest challenge now is not technology, but talent acquisition. It expects its first commercial air taxi routes to be opened within the next two years.
