Beirut's controversial $122m airport terminal deal cancelled after just three days

Following a backlash, the Lebanese Government has agreed to cancel a $122 million contract that would have seen a new terminal being built at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport. The deal, with Lebanese Air Transport (LAT) and Irish company DAA, which runs airports around the world, was cancelled after only three days. The absence of a competitive bidding process and the large contract amount prompted criticism from lawmakers and civil society groups.  Ten groups signed a letter claiming that the contract award "opens the door to corruption and nepotism and allows illegal use of public funds.”
