Schiphol Eliminating Overnight Flights, Private Flights By 2025

Schiphol Airport is looking at eliminating all overnight flights by the end of 2025, but possibly even by the end of 2024. That decision could also push up the price of vacations as a result. The airport is also planning to eliminate all private jet flights as well as prevent loud, outdated aircraft from using the airport. Schiphol predicted the changes would significantly reduce the noise disturbance that about 17,500 nearby residents face. Just the ban on overnight flights will cut down on “serious sleep disturbances” by over 54 percent.

SWISS International Air Lines says it will implement a three-month test of cameras powered by artificial intelligence that will conduct the passenger headcount during boarding. The trial will take place at its Zurich hub between April and June in an attempt to validate whether the technology could revolutionise the boarding process. The cameras will be temporarily installed in the cabin, and recordings gathered from the trial will be used to train the AI programme. SWISS says recordings will be deleted in full compliance with strict European privacy and data protection laws.

Proposed US Law Would Ban Unruly Airline Passengers

A bipartisan group of lawmakers have reintroduced legislation with the goal to improve airline safety, protect flight staff and passengers. The Protection from Abusive Passengers Act, originally introduced in April 2022, is designed to improve air travel safety by holding unruly passengers accountable if they assault a crewmember or fellow passenger. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigated 831 unruly-passenger incidents in 2022, up from 146 just four years ago. The legislation has been endorsed by airline industry leaders and labor organizations.

US Telcos Solve C-Band Airline Interference Issue

Four major US mobile operators have agreed to a series of undertakings designed to address concerns over airline safety and to allow them to use their C-band spectrum to its full extent. US mobile operators have been at loggerheads with the airline industry for some time, the latter having strongly objected to the rollout of C-band spectrum for 5G services, fearing interference with the altimeters used by aircraft. The mobile industry has always insisted that the rules in place were sufficient, but nonetheless made several short-term moves to appease the Federal Aviation Administration.
