World-first refinery will turn human waste into SAF

LCC Wizz Air and sustainable fuels company Firefly have announced plans to build the world's first commercial refinery in Harwich, Essex (UK), to convert human waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The process, called hydrothermal liquefaction, separates sewage sludge into biochar for fertilizer and bio-crude for refining into jet fuel. Anglian Water will provide biosolids for the pilot facility, with the first phase expected to be operational by 2027. SAF plays a crucial role in reducing aviation carbon emissions, and Wizz Air aims to power 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030. The UK government mandates that airlines use at least 10% SAF by 2030.

U.S. Airlines ask Government to pause additional flights to China

The U.S. airline industry, represented by Airlines for America and other trade groups, has urged the federal government to pause the expansion of passenger flights between the USA and China. They cite what they see as the Chinese government's "anti-competitive policies" and limits on market access as reasons for their request. Additionally, the groups say that U.S. airlines are at a disadvantage due to their inability to fly over Russian airspace, while Chinese carriers can, enabling them to charge less for certain flights. The industry asked the government to address these issues and protect U.S. workers and airlines.

LHR urges UK to scrap fee for transit passengers

London Heathrow Airport has urged the UK government to scrap the £10 Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) fee for transit passengers, arguing that it puts UK airports at a competitive disadvantage compared to other European hubs. The ETA, introduced in November for Qatari nationals and set to expand to other countries in 2024, requires travellers to apply and pay the fee before entering the UK, even if using airports for connecting flights. Heathrow reported 19,000 fewer transit passengers from Qatar in the first four months of the ETA implementation. The airport emphasizes the importance of transit passengers for long-haul routes and the UK's economy.

Why Oakland Airport’s Rebrand Is Ruffling Feathers In San Francisco

Oakland International Airport is looking to change its name to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport to improve travellers' geographic awareness of its location near San Francisco. Officials hope the rebrand will attract more airlines and secure additional direct flights. The airport contributes significantly to Oakland's economy, and major airlines like Southwest and Spirit support the change. However, San Francisco officials oppose the plan, arguing it would cause confusion and infringe on SFO's trademark. The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners will vote on the proposal, which could take effect by the end of April if approved.

Next gen security scanners at a London airport halve security waits

London City Airport (LCY) has significantly reduced security wait times over the past year by introducing next-generation CT security scanners. The new scanners allow passengers to pass through security without removing liquids, laptops, and other large electronic devices from their hand luggage and also permit carrying up to two-litre vessels. As a result, the average time spent queuing for security at London City Airport is now just three-and-a-half minutes. While London City aimed to be the first UK airport to fully implement the new scanners, Teesside Airport beat them to it. The government has given some larger airports an additional year to upgrade their security arrangements.
