Finnair Selects Panasonic Avionics to Upgrade its IFE Systems

Finnair has selected Panasonic Avionics to upgrade the in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems across its wide-body long-haul fleet. Panasonic Avionics will install its latest eX3 system in all cabins on Finnair’s eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft and will upgrade the older version of the system in Finnair’s A350-900 aircraft premium cabins. The eX3 system installed onboard Finnair’s long-haul fleet includes HD screens with capacitive touch displays and handsets, and USB and laptop charging facilities. The project is part of Finnair’s cabin enhancements for its long-haul fleet. The first upgraded aircraft has already entered service.

Willa Launches World’s First Influencer Airline

Willa, an influencer payment platform, is launching Willa Air, the first airline designed exclusively for influencers and content creators. Willa Air will offer content creators and influencers tailored travel options for major events throughout the year and has scheduled its inaugural flight to this year’s Coachella Festival. The inaugural flight on April 15 will offer the 12 available seats free of charge to select influencers who apply. The experience will include adaptogenic beverages at its pre-flight lounge, and inflight champagne and desserts. The carrier will offer IV drips, massages, and a juice bar on its return flight.

Vueling Launches New Sustainable Menu and Cabin Incentive

Vueling has launched a new inflight menu, offering more plant-based and gluten-free options. Menu items include a vegan mezze box with rosemary crackers, a roasted red pepper dip, green olives, hummus and baklava; a quinoa salad with chickpeas and mint; a vegan and gluten-free double chocolate, hazelnut and banana cookie and a gluten-free chocolate brownie. Additionally, the carrier has launched a new eco-friendly initiative offering passengers 50 cents off their drink price if they bring their own cup, or a complimentary hot or soft drink with the purchase of a 270 ml reusable cup or 550ml reusable aluminum bottle.

LATAM Opens VIP Lounge at Santiago International Airport

LATAM has opened its revamped VIP Lounge at Santiago International Airport (SCL). The 4,000 square-meter lounge operates on 80 percent renewable energy and features furniture produced from sustainably sourced materials. The lounge will offer updated services, including hand luggage lockers, sleeping areas, family facilities, showers, an open bar, buffet service with Latin American cuisine, ironing services, shoeshine, and co-working spaces. The lounge, located in SCL’s new Terminal 2, will be open to all passengers on international flights or making stopovers from Chile with the LATAM benefits program in VIP categories and travelers flying in premium cabins, alliance customers, and business partners.

Sustainable Aero Lab Releases SAF Market Analysis

Sustainable Aero Lab has released its market analysis, The State of The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Company Ecosystem. The report highlights the key global players in the industry, including promising startups and scaleups. The analysis gives substantial background on different SAF feedstocks and the challenges for aviation and highlights the major start-up "waves" over the past ten years. The study identifies leading stakeholders and companies across six major categories: early-stage startups, late-stage startups, biotech, investors, fuel services, and energy.

BIAL and Amazon Launch Joint Innovation Center

Bangalore International Airport (BIAL), operator of Kempegowda International Airport Airport (BLR), has partnered with Amazon’s cloud computing subsidiary Amazon Web Services to establish a Joint Innovation Center (JIC) to drive the development and adoption of digital solutions in aviation. The companies will develop digital solutions to improve the passenger experience at BLR across retail, dining and entertainment at the airport, and achieve operational efficiencies for BIAL, using technologies including artificial intelligence and virtual reality. As part of the JIC launch, BIAL will deploy Startup Valley, an accelerator program enabling startups to build and accelerate digital solutions in the aviation industry.

Marhaba and PPG Enter Joint Venture Agreement

Marhaba, dnata’s global airport hospitality brand, and Plaza Premium Group (PPG) have entered a joint venture agreement to expand their international offering, including developing the new Marhaba Plaza Premium Lounge at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan. The lounge is already under development and is expected to open in July 2022. It will have a 140-person capacity and will feature design elements inspired by local culture and heritage. “We are thrilled to join forces with PPG to bring our globally renowned airport hospitality services to more travelers across the world,” said Steve Allen, CEO of dnata.

IFSA Scholarship Applications Now Open

Applications for the IFSA Foundation scholarship program are now open. The scholarship is available to all individuals employed by IFSA and APEX members, their families, and students pursuing a career in the catering and onboard services industry and the airline passenger experience industry. Scholarships range from $2,000 to $25,000 and may be used to cover tuition or any additional costs associated with college or educational opportunities.
