Report says Saudi Arabia launching new airline for African Market

Saudi Arabia plans to launch a new airline based in Riyadh, focusing on the African market, reports the country's Al Eqtisadiah newspaper. The airline aims to support tourism and investment between Saudi Arabia and Africa, with approvals from the relevant authorities in place. However, the details of operations, size, and trade name have yet to be determined. The new company aims to transport millions of passengers between Saudi Arabia and Africa by 2030, supporting tourism and religious events and feeding into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's wider goals to attract visitors to the country.

Emirates suspends check-in for transit passengers as airline recovers from Dubai floods

Emirates has suspended check-in services worldwide for passengers transiting through Dubai until at least April 20th, as the airline recovers from historic rainfall and flooding in the city. The decision comes after the airline initially prioritized transit passengers and reopened check-in for departing passengers in Dubai. However, the airside departures area at Dubai International Airport (DXB) remains crowded with passengers. The airport has also closed to arrivals from airlines other than Emirates and flydubai, causing diversions to nearby airports. Emirates apologized for the delays and disruptions, citing resource constraints and road blockages hampering their assistance efforts.

London Gatwick creates new geospatial platform for airport

London Gatwick Airport has developed a new geospatial platform using Esri's GIS technology to support various operational areas, including engineering and environmental services. The platform integrates spatial data from multiple sources, providing a single view of critical infrastructure information. This helps reduce accidental damage to buried utilities during construction works and enables better management of the airport's biodiversity. The system also visualizes the embodied carbon of built assets, supporting sustainability decisions. The airport plans to expand the use of the geospatial platform for estate-wide planning and to share data with local authorities to streamline their planning processes.

European carbon trading catching less than quarter of airline emissions, data finds

Europe's carbon trading schemes only captured 22% of emissions from flights departing the region in 2023, according to a report by Transport & Environment. The schemes, which require companies to buy allowances for their carbon emissions, do not apply to long-haul flights and provide airlines with free allowances. Despite this, airlines paid €3bn in allowances last year. European airlines, which have committed to reaching net zero by 2050, face stringent environmental rules and are at a competitive disadvantage compared to global competitors. The industry is calling for global standards to create a level playing field.

SITA unveils airport management tool

SITA has unveiled a new AI-powered platform called Total Optimizer, which uses the principles of total airport management to optimize various airport functions. The tool addresses the issue of individual airport function optimizations not being well-synchronized, leading to conflicts and reduced efficiencies. Total Optimizer allows airport teams to dynamically set priorities for operational performance, capacity provision, revenue generation, cost efficiency, passenger experience, and sustainability. SITA collaborated with major airport authorities, including Toronto Pearson Airport, to develop and demonstrate the solution's capabilities. The tool is expected to benefit airports of different sizes worldwide by providing significant savings, operational efficiencies, and additional revenues.
