Etihad Plans Weeklong Sustainable Flight Tests

Etihad Airways is planning a week of flight tests to reduce carbon emissions from its services. In partnership with SATAVIA, the carrier plans to use 20 flights testing contrail avoidance technologies and 13 “EcoFlights” testing a range of flight and engine optimization initiatives. The flights will be operated by Etihad’s Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft, including the “Etihad Greenliner,” and its newest aircraft, the “Sustainable 50” A350-1000. “The results we develop will add to the body of work and knowledge base we’ve built to support the aviation industry on its journey to decarbonization,” said Etihad CEO, Tony Douglas.

FAA Makes Zero-Tolerance Policy for Unruly Passengers Permanent

On Wednesday, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that its "zero-tolerance policy" for addressing unruly passengers would become permanent, even after a court ended transportation mask requirements. The Policy was first imposed in January 2021 due to a rise in unruly passenger behavior. The FAA later said the policy would remain as long as an order was in place requiring masks onboard aircraft. Despite the mask mandate being struck down on Monday, the policy, which allows the FAA to issue fines to passengers for unruly behavior instead of warning letters or counseling, will remain in place.

JetBlue Invests in TPG Rise Climate

The venture capital arm of JetBlue has announced its partnership with green investment fund TPG Rise Climate, and will space its investment over annual payments that last six to 10 years. According to a February financial filing, the investment fund, which had raised $6.8 billion, is focused on supporting climate solutions at scale, and decarbonizing transportation is among the fund’s five key focuses. According to JetBlue Technology Ventures president Amy Burr, by putting money into an enormous fund like TPG Rise Climate, JetBlue can be involved in investments on a much larger scale than it can on its own.

Hawaiian Airlines has announced a new partnership with Jason Momoa's water company Mananalu, featuring recyclable aluminum bottles. Starting April 21, the 16-ounce bottles will be available for passengers flying in the airline’s premium cabins on all U.S. East Coast and international flights and will replace the plastic water bottles sold on the flight's Pau Hana snack cart. The carrier anticipates eliminating approximately 142,000 plastic bottles each year through the partnership. Additionally, for every plastic bottle replaced onboard, Mananalu, a certified carbon neutral company and 1% for the Planet member, will divert an additional bottle away from oceans through its partnership with Repurpose Global.
