ThinKom On Unsticking Airlines With A Sticky Multi-Orbit Antenna

Recent geostationary satellite anomalies have strengthened the case for multi-orbit, multi-constellation connectivity in the aviation industry. Intelsat, Viasat, and SES have faced challenges with their satellite assets, prompting airlines to seek resilient, future-proof antenna solutions that can support multiple orbits and constellations. ThinKom's VICTS antenna hardware is multi-orbit capable and can be paired with a small Hughes ESA to support GEO/MEO/HEO + Eutelsat OneWeb's LEO network. The concept of retaining antenna hardware while swapping managed service providers is gaining traction, giving airlines flexibility and "unstickiness" in their connectivity choices.

GAO Calls For Modifications To Better Protect Airports From Drones

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has suggested that modifications to statutory authorities for drone detection and counter-drone operations could better protect airports against active drone threats. Since 2021, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has reported over 2,000 drone sightings near airports, with 63 incidents causing pilots to take evasive action. The Departments of Homeland Security (DHS), Justice (DOJ), Defense, and Energy have express statutory authority to use counter-drone technologies if certain criteria are met. These technologies can be used at airports by DHS and DOJ if the drone poses a credible threat to safety or security.
