JetBlue Makes Hostile Offer for Spirit Airlines

JetBlue has launched a hostile takeover offer for Spirit Airlines and has urged the carrier's shareholders to vote against the planned merger of Spirit and Frontier. In a letter issued today to Spirit shareholders, JetBlue listed the benefits of its offer and said it has confidence it will obtain regulatory approval for a deal with Spirit. The new all-cash takeover offer is at $30 per share, lower than the initially proposed $33, which JetBlue said is due to Spirit’s board refusal to engage. Still, JetBlue remains open to making an offer at the original price should Spirit want to negotiate.

Aeroflot Purchases Eight Airbus A330 Aircraft from Foreign Lessors

Aeroflot has purchased eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft that it had previously leased. The aircraft, owned by unnamed foreign lessors, have already been reregistered in Russia under Vladimir Putin’s law, allowing its airlines to reregister foreign-owned aircraft instead of returning them to lessors. Aeroflot intends to use the newly purchased aircraft for international flights, which they would be unable to do with reregistered leased aircraft since landing in nearly any foreign country would risk having the aircraft impounded. The purchase was made through an exception to the sanctions declared by the EU.
