Finnair to Equip ATR Fleet with HEPA Filters

Finnair is to equip its fleet of 12 ATR aircraft, which are operated by partner company Norra on short-haul domestic and regional routes, with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters. Installations will begin next month and be completed by early 2022. Juha Ojala, VP Finnair Technical Operations, said, “By introducing HEPA filters to our ATR fleet, we’ll be further raising the hygiene level in our ATR aircraft from an already high standard.” Finnair’s Airbus and Embraer aircraft are already fitted with HEPA filters.

Flydubai Introduces Wireless IFE in Economy Class

Earlier this month, flydubai introduced complimentary wireless in-flight entertainment (IFE) provided by its connectivity provider, AIRTIME. The solution is available across 36 Next-Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft and replaces seatback IFE in economy class. “We will add more content in additional languages in the coming few months,” said Daniel Kerrison, flydubai's VP Inflight Product. Kerrison added that the carrier is also planning on introducing Bluetooth headphone pairing on its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

Abu Dhabi to Eliminate Quarantine, Ethiopian Begins Staff Vaccinations

From July 1, Abu Dhabi will cease quarantine requirements for all international visitors. It currently requires incoming passengers to quarantine for 10 days unless they’re from a "green list" country. "It will be similar to the Dubai system – the PCR protocol will be different from high-risk to low- risk destinations," said Ali Al Shaiba, executive director of Tourism and Marketing, DCT Abu Dhabi. Elsewhere, Ethiopian Airlines has begun vaccinating employees at the Ethiopian Aviation Academy. They are set to receive their second dose four weeks after the first.

HOU to Introduce LiveReach Media’s Motion Tracking Solution

Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is integrating LiveReach Media’s motion analytics platform into its technology infrastructure to provide social distance monitoring and to show passengers estimated wait times at TSA and immigration checkpoints via monitors at retail and restaurant locations. Diego Parra, HOU’s director, IT Program Management, explained, “Houston Airports is looking to expand LiveReach Media’s comprehensive analytics and advanced artificial intelligence to become the airport system of the future.” LiveReach Media’s solution is also in use at Philadelphia and El Paso airports.

Volocopter Reveals Plans for Fixed-Wing eVTOL Aircraft

Volocopter is hoping to certify a fixed-wing version of its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, VoloConnect, in the next five years. VoloConnect has four seats and is designed to link suburbs to cities with a range of 100 kilometers (62 miles) on each charge of its batteries. The company has been developing the aircraft for two years and has already tested full-scale prototypes. VoloConnect will join Volocopter's existing portfolio of urban air mobility solutions: VoloDrone, VoloCity, VoloPort and digital platform, VoloIQ.

WBA’s Wi-Fi 6 Network Using OpenRoaming Live at GRU

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has launched the first at-airport Wi-Fi 6 network using OpenRoaming at Brazil’s São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) Terminal 3. The network is powered by Cisco and managed by Boingo. “WBA OpenRoaming completely transforms the user experience ... by eliminating the registrations, log-ins and other traditional authentication processes and replacing them all with a secure and seamless onboarding framework,” explained Cisco Wireless’ CTO, Matt MacPherson. Airport visitors are entitled to up to four hours of free Wi-Fi.
