Frontier Offers Spirit $250M if Takeover Bid Denied

Frontier Airlines has agreed to pay Spirit Airlines $250 million if antitrust regulators knock the airline's takeover bid back. The offer is part of ongoing bidding between Frontier and JetBlue for the acquisition of Spirit Airlines. The $250 million offer equates to $2.23 per share and has the support of the directors of both airlines. Spirit's shareholder meeting is on June 10, and Spirit's directors are encouraging shareholders to approve the buyout offer from Frontier rather than JetBlue's larger offer.

Turkish Airlines to Extend Onboard Wi-Fi from Gate to Gate

Turkish Airlines has announced it is strengthening the internet service provided on its aircraft to extend the service to be an uninterrupted experience that starts as the aircraft doors are closed. Currently, the airline activates the service only when the aircraft is above 10,000 feet. The airline will initially offer the Gate to Gate service on 131 aircraft, 74 narrow-body and 57 wide-body, starting in May. It will extend this service to other aircraft that provide internet in its fleet in stages over time.

Avolon Announces New Partners to Bring eVTOL to Brazil

Aircraft-leasing company Avolon has announced partnerships with global aviation and airport leaders, including Corporación América Airports, GOL, Grupo Comporte and Vertical Aerospace, to expedite the introduction of eVTOL operations in Brazil. The companies will explore the infrastructure requirements and define vertiport design and locations for eVTOL operations, to bring eVTOL passenger flights to Brazil this decade. As part of the collaboration, a team from Corporación América Airports is dedicated to the research and development of the Advanced Air Mobility segment as well as the airport's design, construction and operation, and passenger traffic management.

Centurion Lounge at CLT Updates Menu with New Executive Chef

Renowned Charlotte chef Greg Collier is now the executive chef at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s (CLT) Centurion Lounge. Chef Greg’s Centurian Lounge menu will serve modern interpretations of Southern classics that celebrate Mississippi River valley foodways: Memphis; Jackson, Mississippi; and New Orleans. The new menu includes French toast topped with a golden raisin compote and black pepper whipped cream; and roasted cabbage with andouille sausage and hot honey. Greg Collier is a finalist and a two-time semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation awards and co-owns Bayhaven Restaurant Group.

Spirit Launches Biometric Technologies and Self-Bag Drop at LAX

Spirit Airlines has unveiled a self-bag drop and biometric photo-matching system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The carrier will operate an initial testing period at LAX for the biometric technology, during which it will have both manual ID check and biometric opt-in before launching a full roll-out, eliminating the need to hand government ID to an agent when checking baggage. The system works by combining the biometric photo-matching solution with automated self-bag drop capabilities to reduce face-to-face interaction.

CBP Completes Biometric technology Roll-Out Across International Airports

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has completed the introduction of biometric facial comparison technology at all international airports across the U.S. The biometric technology, Simplified Arrival, is an enhanced arrival process designed to fulfill a Congressional mandate to record the entry and exit of non-U.S. citizens using biometrics. Through the system, foreign travelers who have previously traveled to the U.S. may no longer need to provide fingerprints. Instead, their identity will be confirmed through the touchless facial biometric process. U.S. travelers and foreign nationals who are not required to provide biometrics can opt-out.

Iowa DOT Announces $100M in Funding for Airports Statewide

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) announced on Thursday the distribution of $100 million in grants for eight airports across the state. The money will come from the Iowa Commercial Aviation Infrastructure Fund, which was revealed in March. More than half of the funding will go to the Des Moines International Airport to construct a five-story parking garage, add a new commercial multi-lane drive next to the garage, and complete part of the terminal project. The Eastern Iowa Airport is getting the second most at $28.3 million to complete the final phase of the Terminal Modernization started in 2014.
