Japan Airlines Purchases 5.3 Million Gallons of SAF

Japan Airlines (JAL) has inked a deal with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) producer Gevo to purchase 5.3 million gallons of SAF annually over a five-year period, with deliveries expected to start in 2027. The deal is a part of a commitment made in March 2022 by Oneworld Alliance, of which JAL is a member. The agreement is contingent on Gevo developing, financing and constructing one or more production facilities to produce the SAF.

Cathay Receives $993 Million in Funding

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific has been given access to another $993 million in Hong Kong Government loans, to take the carrier through to June 8, 2023.  Chief Executive Officer Augustus Tang said that this will provide greater flexibility for the airline to manage liquidity as it emerges from the pandemic.  Tang said that the airline has already recommenced hiring in anticipation of a recovery in Hong Kong and global aviation.

OneWeb Confirms Launch Schedule into 2023

Following on from CTO Massimiliano Ladovaz’s confirmation that 2022 will see two more launches, OneWeb has outlined its 2023 launch schedule.  Ladovaz said that three more launches early next year will be required to reach the planned global footprint. VP Mobility Ben Griffin estimates that full coverage can be reached in early 2024, bearing in mind this launch timing.

Air New Zealand Upgrades its Culinary Offering

Air New Zealand is launching a new international menu, which will be rolled out from October on all long-haul flights, including the upcoming non-stop Auckland - New York and Auckland - Chicago routes. Passengers flying to and from Rarotonga (Cook Islands) were given a preview of the new ‘Business Premier’ menu. The new offering will include a ‘Koha [gift] from the Kitchen’ to be served after take-off. Shared as a token of gratitude, the bite-size morsel is made of local ingredients such as Paua mollusk and seaweed from Akaroa.

Southwest Picks Astronics In-Seat Power for MAX Twinjets

Astronics Corporation and Southwest have signed an agreement for Astronics to provide its EMPOWER® Passenger In-Seat Power System for installation on 475 Boeing 737 MAX-7 and MAX-8 aircraft. This award is part of Southwest’s recently announced significant cabin upgrade initiative to enhance customer experience. Astronics will begin delivering in the fourth quarter of 2022 for retrofit installations on Southwest Airlines’ existing MAX-8 fleet which will begin in early 2023.  Aircraft on the production line will begin in 2023.

Aeroflot Receives a $3 Million Cash Injection

Russian airline Aeroflot, which has been hit by Western sanctions and flight bans, has received a $3 million cash injection, with a large part of the funds coming from Russia’s National Wealth Fund. The Russian Government has additionally promised to invest $1.74 billion in the airline. The EU, USA, Canada and UK have all shut off their airspace to Russian aircraft, while Airbus and Boeing have stopped deliveries.
