UK relaxes slots rule for struggling aviation sector

The UK is set to relax rules that would normally see airlines lose their take-off and landing privileges at airports if they don't use their slots. The recent surge in air travel demand, coupled with staff shortages, has created disruption at airports, resulting in the cancellation of hundreds of flights. With this move, the government is giving airlines “a short window to make slots available for the rest of the summer season that they don’t think they can use.” This will enable carriers to plan ahead, provide realistic summer schedules and avoid last-minute flight cancellations.

SkyFive and FTI Engineering Network announce partnership

SkyFive and FTI have teamed up to deliver a software-defined network service that can integrate various inflight connectivity systems: Air to Ground (A2G) networks, satellite services, and public and private 4G/5G airport networks. The service steers data flows based on their individual performance, availability, and cost per bit requirements. For bulk passenger data it could rely on A2G coverage in dense continental airspaces and switch to a satellite service on oceanic routes. For mission-critical traffic, it could leverage several systems in parallel to achieve an extremely high degree of reliability. The new network service allows airlines to bring the fleet online in an agile, future-proof, and cost-efficient manner.

ExxonMobil paves the way with Methanol to SAF technology

ExxonMobil has unveiled its new process technology to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from renewable methanol. Using its methanol to jet proprietary process technology and catalysts, ExxonMobil converts methanol derived from the gasification of biomass and waste, captured carbon dioxide or lower-carbon hydrogen into SAF. This solution also provides the flexibility to use a mix of alcohols as feedstock and produce renewable diesel and lower-carbon chemical feedstocks. The company is in the process of identifying opportunities to deploy these technology solutions to help with decarbonisation in the aviation industry.

Causeway Aero unveils lightweight SFL panels for aircraft interiors

Causeway Aero Group announced that it has developed unique light-weight Semi-Flexible Laminate (SFL) panels for aircraft interiors. The panels provide improved levels of thermal protection, allowing bulky insulating blankets to be removed which could result in up to 25% weight saving. There may also be a modest increase in cabin dimensions, as the company says the panels could be fitted closer to the aircraft inner skin. The SFL panels have a vac-formed core with laminates on either side and the cabin side can be decorated to suit customer requirements. Very happy to be back at @British_Airways first lounge in Gatwick. Quiet, nice Canard-Duchene champ and enjoyed the menu. A vast vast improvement to the contract lounge I had to endure in the North Terminal back in March #paxex #travel
