United CEO Predicts Pilot Shortage, Delta Goes on Hiring Spree

United's CEO Scott Kirby has said that the US could soon face a pilot shortage because the military is producing far fewer than it did during the Cold War. The carrier hopes to hire 10,000 new pilots over the next decade. Meanwhile, Delta has announced plans to hire 1,000 pilots by next summer to cater to the rebounding travel market. The airline said it would take on 75 new pilots between June and August. Delta canceled hundreds of flights over Thanksgiving and Christmas due to staff shortages. American Airlines is currently canceling many services for the same reason.

Compensation Fund Opened for Families of Boeing 737 MAX Victims

A $500 million victim compensation fund has been opened for the families of the 346 people killed in two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019. The fund is part of a settlement agreement reached between the US Department of Justice and Boeing in January. Nearly $1.45 million will go to each eligible family. Distribution will be on a rolling basis as claim forms are submitted and completed. The deadline to submit a claim is October 15. The settlement meant Boeing avoided criminal prosecution, but the victims' families have continued with civil litigation against the company.

Péladeau Withdraws Transat AT Acquisition Offer

Pierre Karl Péladeau is no longer in discussions about acquiring Transat AT. He had made a non-binding offer of $5 per share in cash if Transat AT’s purchase offer from Air Canada didn’t go through. “Considering the current share price, the price offered no longer provides a reasonable basis to envision receiving the level of shareholder approval required in order to allow the transaction to proceed,” Transat AT said. Air Canada withdrew from a deal to buy the company earlier this year when it came to light that Europe was unwilling to approve the transaction. Transat AT said it will now focus on its strategic plan.
