US Passport Applicants Can Self-Select Their Gender

The US State Department has announced that Americans can self-select their gender without the need for medical documentation if the selection does not match the gender stated on other identity documents. Rodrigo Heng-Lehtinen, deputy executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, said, “Inaccurate IDs open transgender people up to harassment and discrimination. Reforming US passports is a common-sense way to improve the lives of transgender people.” The policy also applies to Consular Reports of Birth Abroad.
