SmartSky’s Tower Radios Receive FCC Certification

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has certified SmartSky Networks’ ground-based remote radioheads, signifying another technical milestone for the company, which is due to launch its air-to-ground in-flight connectivity network later this year. SmartSky’s CEO, David Helfgott, commented, “Deployment of the FCC-certified tower radios ... coupled with the availability of our shipset products (high-performance antennas, aircraft radios) gives our service-partners and dealers great confidence to begin accepting orders.”

Viettel to Provide Vietnam Airlines with IFC

Vietnam Airlines has entered into a strategic cooperation with the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) that will last until 2025. Under the deal, Viettel will provide air to ground in-flight connectivity (IFC) for the carrier as well as supporting its digital transformation. As such, Vietnam Airlines will make use of Viettel’s business management, infrastructure services and IT systems. Viettel will also build the airline a self-service check-in system. The two companies have worked together since 2013.

IATA to Introduce Mobility Aids Action Group

IATA is creating a task force to improve the transport and handling of mobility aids such as wheelchairs during air travel. The Mobility Aids Action Group will consist of airlines, airports and ground service providers alongside accessibility organizations that represent travelers with disabilities and companies that manufacture mobility aids. Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, said, "We acknowledge that we are not where we want to be on this as an industry. This is why we want to do something about it on a global scale… by bringing the key groups together to take practical action."

UK Airlines See Proof of Pent-Up Travel Demand

UK carriers easyJet and British Airways (BA) both reported a surge in demand following the government’s announcement that from July 19, fully vaccinated passengers no longer have to self-isolate on their return from “amber list” countries. BA said within hours of the news it saw a 96% increase in the number of views on its website compared to a week ago. The airline's most-searched destinations include Barbados, Palma, Ibiza and New York. Similarly, easyJet said flight bookings from the UK to “amber list” countries have grown by 400% and that holiday bookings are up 440%.

Milan Malpensa Introduces Luxury Online Marketplace

Milan Malpensa Airport has launched a luxury online marketplace featuring approximately 2,000 products in partnership with Dufry. Access to the Milan Malpensa Boutique requires passengers to enter their personal data and flight details. Duty-free prices are available to those traveling to non-EU destinations, while intra-EU travelers can access goods at duty-paid prices. Purchases are processed on the day of the passengers’ flight departure and can be collected in stores or at the airport. Milan Malpensa was working on the project pre-COVID-19, but said the crisis accelerated its development.

100 States Participating in CORSIA, Says ICAO

The total number of States participating in ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) has hit 100. States that have recently joined CORSIA include Barbados, Grenada, Oman, Trinidad and Tobago and others. While the organization said its implementation of CO2 monitoring, reporting and verification is on track, it believes more participating States will bring its global aspirational goal of carbon neutral growth for international aviation even closer.
