JetBlue Announces Deal To Buy Spirit Airlines

JetBlue Airways has announced a $3.8 billion deal to buy Spirit Airlines. The announcement comes a day after Spirit ended the merger deal with Frontier, also marking the end of the months-long bidding war between JetBlue & Frontier Airlines. Spirit had repeatedly rebuffed JetBlue’s offer fearing it wouldn’t be approved by the regulators. However, they lacked shareholder approval for the Frontier merger, and had even postponed the voting four times to rally support. Experts predict that the deal could lead to higher fares.

Earlier this week, LIFT Airline gave its passengers a unique travel experience with members of Cape Town Opera Company singing in the aisle during a flight. The opera and musical performances provided a welcome distraction from the airline’s day-to-day operations. Launched in 2020, LIFT is one of South Africa’s newest airlines. It offers flexible air travel by allowing passengers to change or cancel flights regardless of the ticket type. Refurbishing aircraft is hugely time consuming and expensive. I dunno how @JetBlue is going to come up with the cash for this. Even huge airline struggle with refurbs. United hasn't managed to do one single aircraft since announcing #UnitedNext more than a year ago. #PaxEx

> Quote of the Day

"We've learned a lot over the last few months. They've [JetBlue] got an aggressive strategy to get this deal done. We're going to be right by their side making sure it happens, because it's good for our group. Some of the narrative is this is going to create a big national competitor to the Big Four."

Ted Christie, CEO of Spirit Airlines
