SpiceJet Explores Selling Stake To A Middle Eastern Carrier

India’s low-cost carrier SpiceJet is looking for urgent recapitalization to maintain smooth operations. The airline is in talks with a Middle Eastern carrier which has expressed its interest to acquire a 24% stake and a board seat. An Indian conglomerate has also expressed its interest to infuse capital in the airline in exchange for partial equity. Amid its dwindling finances, SpiceJet is yet to declare the results of the last quarter. Moreover, there have been no reports of employee salary revision even as the pandemic recedes.

Schiphol Extends Passenger Volume Restrictions Till October

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport (AMS) has announced the extension of its passenger volume restrictions through September and October. The passenger caps were introduced in summer to cope with long waiting times and logistical problems. For September, AMS has set a cap of 67,500 local departures per day. This will be increased to 69,500 per day in October to accommodate the autumn holidays. By limiting capacity, AMS intends to ensure passenger and employee safety amid the disruption caused by workforce shortage.

Lufthansa Launches Green Fare For CO2-Neutral Flying

Lufthansa Group has become the first international aviation group to launch a Green Fare which will allow CO2-neutral flying. The fare will include the full CO2 compensation in the price. 80% of the carbon offsetting will be done through high-quality climate protection projects and 20% via purchase of sustainable aviation fuels. The test run of the fare has begun in Scandinavia and will be available on flights operated by Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, in both economy and business class.

Malaysia Airlines Launches New Baggage Self-Service Reporting Feature

Malaysia Airlines has launched a new Baggage Self-Service Reporting service that allows passengers to report any delayed or missing baggage instantly. Passengers can easily report, track and monitor the recovery process via their personal devices. They can also seamlessly contact airline representatives to get updates on their reports. The feature is in line with the airline’s efforts to digitize end-to-end traveler touchpoints and facilitate a seamless travel experience. The newly launched service is available for passengers across all of Malaysia Airlines' domestic and international networks.

FAA Solicits Public Comments On Minimum Airplane Seat Dimensions

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will solicit feedback from the public regarding a proposed airplane seat size regulation. The FAA has announced a 90-day comment period during which interested members of the public can submit feedback on possible minimum seat dimensions that are necessary for passenger safety. With this, the agency is all set to act on a Congressional mandate passed in September 2018. The agency was given a year to establish the standard but failed to do so. Advocates have also called for a moratorium on airlines to stop further reductions in seat width and pitch.

Brussels Airlines Launches New Safety Video

Brussels Airlines partnered with Belgian band Hooverphonic to launch a new safety video which will be shown on all long haul flights. The band has created a catchy tune for the video based on the safety instructions written by the airline. Launched on August 1, the video comprises surrealistic images including an homage to Belgian artist René Magritte. On the launch day, Hooverphonic had performed the new song at a gate at Brussels Airport, in addition to two of their own songs.

Indian City Of Chennai To Get Second Airport At Parandur

As the operational period of the Chennai International Airport nears its end, Chennai is looking to build a new airport. The Parandur area, located 70 km southwest of Chennai, has been selected as the ideal site by the state government. The new airport will require an investment of Rs 20,000 crore and span across approximately 4,500 acres of land. It would cater to 100 million passengers and 500 daily flights initially. The airport at Parandur will also feature two runways, terminal buildings, taxiways, and a cargo terminal.
