IAG Takes 20% Stake In Air Europa To Boost Madrid Hub

International Airlines Group (IAG) has become the second largest shareholder in Madrid-based airline Air Europa after converting a loan. IAG was initially in talks to acquire Air Europa, but scrapped the planned deal in December 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with other parties showing interest in Air Europa, IAG came up with a new strategy and made a €100 million seven-year unsecured loan to Air Europa’s owner Globalia, with an option to convert the loan into an equity stake.

Akasa Air Looks To Receive A New Aircraft Every Two Weeks

Akasa Air has received three of its 72 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on order so far. The airline recently stated that it would receive a new aircraft every two weeks until all 72 aircraft have been delivered. The airline announced that it is gaining financial stability and anticipates that, in 18 months, it will place another order for the MAX. The airline stated that this order would be significantly larger than the first. In November 2021, Akasa Air placed its first order for 72 737 MAX aircraft. It now operates three of those aircraft.

IFC Market Set To Double In The Coming Decade

Analysis by leading space consulting and market intelligence firm Euroconsult shows a 10% increase in the number of commercial aircraft connected to in-flight services compared to 2020, totalling 9,900 planes by the end of 2021. Within the next decade, the number of aircraft using such services is expected to double to more than 21,000. Data in Euroconsult’s ‘Prospects for In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity’ report reveals in-flight connectivity showed strong signs of uptake in the year with 120 commercial airlines offering in-flight connectivity to passengers with a total bandwidth capacity consumption rising to an unprecedented 24 gigabytes per second.

Bengaluru Airport Launches Beta Version Of DigiYatra App

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has launched a beta version of the contactless boarding DigiYatra app. The DigiYatra app creates contactless, paperless processing of airport passengers, based on the use of single token face biometrics for verification of passengers. Passengers can pass through check-in and security and board their respective flights using biometrics for validating their identity and boarding pass. The DigiYatra biometric boarding system at e-gates is now operational at the airport and being rolled out at full scale for all domestic airlines in a phased manner. Vistara Airlines and AirAsia are the two airlines currently integrated with DigiYatra.

Singapore Airlines Launches Products Upcycled From Business Class Seats

Singapore Airlines has partnered with leather and paper gift craftsman Bynd Artisan as part of the airline's Upcycling Project, to create a range of upscaled lifestyle items made using leather from retired business class seating. According to a press release by Singapore-based Bynd Artisan, the collection includes a key holder with strap wristlet (featuring the words “Pull for life vest”), as well as a crossbody pouch sling, a watch and valet tray stand, and a phone and name card stand.The last three items are also emblazoned with Singapore Airlines’ batik motif, and come packed in velvet drawstring bags.

Cathay Pacific Reboots Loyalty Program

Cathay Pacific frequent flyers began receiving their new membership cards in the post this week. Bearing just the simple Cathay brand and the holder’s status, the redesigned plastic is for many the first and most noticeable change following the airline’s contentious decision to retire the Marco Polo Club. The airline says this one-stop approach will allow members to earn and redeem Asia Miles, accrue Status Points, as well as access the latest unique offerings all in one place.

Air Canada Commits To Environmental Transparency By Publishing TCFD Report

Air Canada issued its first report aligned with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) in its latest move to prove itself as a greener airline. Similar to a strategic audit, the TCFD was created by the Financial Stability Board to provide information to investors about what Air Canada is doing to mitigate the risks of climate change. It encourages transparency about how the flag carrier is governed. The Star Alliance member airline's TCFD report will address its governance structure, strategies, and risk management. This report complements Air Canada's annual Climate Disclosure Project and corporate sustainability reports.
