U.S. Airlines To Provide Meals, Hotel Rooms For Delays

Major U.S. airlines told the U.S. Transportation Department (USDOT) that they will provide meals for customers delayed by three hours or more, and hotel rooms for stranded passengers if prompted by issues under the airlines' control. Several airlines have detailed commitments in customer service plans they updated this week at USDOT's prompting. Many airlines have previously offered vouchers or hotel rooms for delays they caused but did not spell out commitments in customer service plans.

Iceland Celebrates First Passenger Flight Of An Electric Aircraft

Icelandair participated in a landmark event last week when the company Rafmagnsflug ehf. operated the first commercial flight of an electric airplane in the country. The President and the Prime Minister of Iceland were the first passengers. This electric airplane is a two-seater Pipistrel manufactured in Slovenia and a registration TF-KWH. According to the Icelandic Transport Authority, this aircraft was manufactured in 2021; it has a maximum weight of 600 kilograms and can only carry one passenger at a time.

Delta Introduces Southern-Inspired Meals

Delta Air Lines travelers departing from Atlanta, can indulge in meals curated by Chef Mashama Bailey, the winner of the 2022 James Beard Foundation’s “Outstanding American Chef” award. She also serves as the Co-Founder and Executive Chef at an award-winning restaurant, The Grey. These meals will be served for lunch and dinner on domestic First-Class flights departing from Atlanta. There will also be an option for International Delta One travelers departing from Atlanta to pre-select these curated menu items.

Samsung Launches Immersive Technology Experience At Heathrow’s T5

Samsung has launched an immersive technology experience, called In Tune With You, at London Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5. The space aims to create a place for passengers to virtually step outside the airport environment and have mood-boosting experiences. On entering the space, the Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro display uses lift-and-learn technology to enable passengers to try the device and measure their blood oxygen level. The digital screen delivers personalized information based on each passenger taking part. At the heart of the area is a Galaxy Buds soundscape, where passengers can experience 360° sound.

Lagardère Travel Retail Captures Master Concession Contract At Madinah Airport

Lagardère Travel Retail has been awarded an exclusive master concession contract to operate 14 duty free and other retail spaces at Madinah International Airport. The company builds on its existing presence in the Kingdom and becomes the only duty-free retailer across the country’s four main international airports. The new outlets will cover 1,900sq m overall, including 614sq m for duty free stores. The shops, under the Aelia Duty Free and Relay brands, will feature duty free core business categories, travel accessories alongside souvenirs and snacking.

Boeing Forecasts Indian Airlines Raising Capacity By 25%

Boeing expects Indian airlines to boost their capacity by at least 25% over the next year as demand rebounds quickly in the world’s fastest-growing major market. In the longer term, Boeing expects an annual capacity increase of 7% in India, outpacing other top high-growth markets. Even though Boeing dominates India’s widebody market, fare wars and high costs have led to casualties among full-service carriers. But the new budget carrier Akasa Air, and the new owners at Air India and Jet Airways are giving the U.S. planemaker hope of clawing back share in the Indian market.
