Lufthansa Cancels 800 Flights Due To Pilots’ Strike

German airline group Lufthansa has canceled 800 flights to and from its main German hubs in Munich and Frankfurt today, affecting nearly 130,000 passengers. Further cancelations and delays are expected over the weekend. The flights have been canceled due to a strike called by Lufthansa pilots after pay negotiations with Lufthansa failed. The pilot union is seeking a 5.5% wage increase by the end of the year, automatic compensation for inflation and an adjustment of its salary grid.

Airbus In Talks To Supply A220s To India’s Jet Airways

Indian carrier Jet Airways is in advanced talks with Airbus to order about 50 Airbus SE A220 aircraft. Deliveries of the new aircraft are expected to start in 2025. It is unclear whether the planes will be bought outright by the airline or leased. This could potentially mark a fresh beginning for the bankrupt airline that is attempting to make a comeback via a court-monitored restructuring. Jet Airways is also in talks with Boeing and Airbus for a potential order from the 737 Max or A320neo family.

London Heathrow Airport To Provide Free Period Products

London Heathrow Airport staff will now have access to free period products. Over 100 dispensers have been placed in the airport’s female and accessible staff toilets to improve staff well-being. The airport’s gender equality network has partnered with social enterprise Hey Girls and airport service company Mitie for the initiative. The partnership comes following a four-month pilot at the airport that saw 24 dispensers placed in staff bathrooms. Free period products will also be donated to local community partners such as homeless shelters and women’s refuges, in an attempt to end period poverty.

Air Canada Highlights Sustainability Achievements In New Report

Air Canada has released the 2021 edition of its annual corporate sustainability report called Citizens of the World. The report details the airline’s progress in such areas as safety, wellness, the environment, and employee and community engagement. It also explains how the airline integrates environmental and social factors into its daily operations. The report includes Air Canada’s ambitious Climate Action Plan to achieve net-zero by 2050, the Leave Less Travel Program and the comprehensive customer and employee safety program, Air Canada CleanCare+.

easyJet Adds Lounge Access For FLEXIfare Customers

easyjet has launched a trial offer that allows its FLEXIfare customers free lounge access to its year-old ‘Gateway by easyJet & No1 Lounges’ service at London’s Gatwick airport. Access to the lounge is available to all FLEXIfare members until November 30. They will be able to use the lounge daily for up to three hours from 6am. The FLEXIfare option is the closest thing the airline has to a business class offering. It includes speedy boarding, use of dedicated easyJet Plus Bag Drop, fast track security, and free flight and route changes.

Sydney Airport Unveils Phase One Of Luxury Precinct Stores

Sydney Airport has updated its luxury retail precinct at the T1 International terminal with the arrival of luxury and premium fashion brands, marking the first phase of the store openings. The 2,700 sqm streetscape boasts of fashion brands like Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Bvlgari, Hermès, and Saint Laurent. Nine more luxury brands are expected to launch by mid-2023. New zones of the airport will have an expanded range of luxury brands, some of which are exclusive to Sydney Airport.

Samarkand Airport Launches ePassport Control System

Samarkand International Airport has revealed the first ever E-gate border control system in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The E-gate software and hardware system allows safe and uninterrupted processing of arriving passengers. The automated border control system is based on biometric technologies that allows automatic passenger identification for quick and safe border crossing with minimal involvement of border control officers. The system incorporates document readers, and high-resolution video cameras that carry out video surveillance and comparison of passengers’ biometric data with the identity documents.
