JetBlue Agrees To Sell Spirit Assets To Win Merger Approval

JetBlue has agreed to sell off Spirit Airlines’ assets at Newark Liberty and Boston Logan airports to Allegiant Air, in an effort to win approval for a merger with Spirit Airlines. This move follows JetBlue’s decision three months ago to divest all of Spirit Airlines’ holdings at New York’s LaGuardia Airport to Frontier Airlines. The Justice Department sued in March to block the merger, arguing it could lead to higher fares for travelers and further concentrate the airline industry. If approved, the merger would create America's fifth-largest airline and a low-cost juggernaut.

H2FLY’s Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft Completes Its First Flight

H2FLY, a German developer of hydrogen fuel technologies, has completed the world’s first piloted flight of a liquid hydrogen-powered electric aircraft. This marks a significant milestone in using hydrogen to power medium and long-range emissions-free flights. The achievement is part of Project HEAVEN, a consortium led by H2FLY and supported by the European government. The successful test flight and the use of liquid hydrogen, which allows for lower tank weights and volume compared to gaseous hydrogen, brings the industry closer to decarbonizing aviation.

Solar Panels To Provide 20% Of Birmingham Airport’s Electricity

Birmingham Airport (BHX) in the UK plans to install a 6.8MW solar panel configuration, providing at least 20% of its on-site electrical power, between September 2023 and May 2024. The 12,804 photovoltaic panels will be installed on a noise-blocking embankment, moving the airport closer to its goal of becoming net zero-carbon by 2033 and reducing reliance on the power grid and exposure to market price volatility. Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council confirmed the work does not require planning permission. The initiative is part of BHX’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to combating climate change.
