Rolls-Royce And Alder Fuels To Test Greencrude Derived SAF

Aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce has partnered with Alder Fuels to test Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) produced using Alder Greencrude (AGC) technology. The testing, which will include flight tests on a Rolls-Royce Pearl engine, will evaluate the energy efficiency, emissions criteria, and low-carbon credentials of the SAF produced from AGC. Alder Fuels uses biomass such as regenerative grasses, forest residues and agricultural waste products to create low-carbon AGC and converts it into a drop-in SAF utilizing bio and petroleum refinery infrastructure.

Trend Alert: Amenities And Comfort Suppliers Are Wowing With Wellness

In-flight kits, comfort items and amenities are the first things to welcome passengers on board. Recently, experts at Plane Talking Products (PTP) have noticed a definite shift towards products that have sustainability at their core, as well as the mental and physical wellbeing of the passenger. For example, Bayart Innovations launched a new kit inspired by traditional Turkish motifs for the passengers onboard Turkish Airlines’ long-haul Economy. Loungewear company Recliner was tapped by Buzz to create an eco-friendly sleepsuit option for American Airlines which soars above the rest. WESSCO collaborated with wellness curator Wanderfuel in 2019 for a collection of kits for JetBlue’s Mint cabin, and last year they delivered an environmentally conscious amenity kit for the LATAM Business Class. Even PTP launched a 100% plastic-free amenity kit earlier this year.

AirFi LEO Aims To Alter The Inflight Retail Landscape

With successful tests on two airlines, AirFi sees certification of its LEO inflight connectivity offering on the horizon. The company must also make the business case to airlines, sliding AirFi LEO in between the higher priced and higher bandwidth satellite offerings and the disconnected status quo. The AirFi LEO system is a lightweight offering, consisting of two small antennas mounted in the plane’s windows, a modem, and the AirFi media box. AirFi operates with a very different view of the market, and a different take on how much bandwidth is necessary. The two most compelling features for AirFi LEO today are real-time weather updates and transaction processing on board.

“The use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel as a low-emission solution and its global commercial deployment is essential to the decarbonization of medium to long-haul air travel. While we are also working on electrification, hybrid-electric and hydrogen technologies as long-term alternatives, rapid decarbonization is within reach through this critical pathway. Through our partnership with Alder Fuels, we are taking the next steps on our journey to net zero and are committed supporters of the UN Race to Zero goal of 10% Saf use across aviation by 2030.”
