Embraer Unveils Energia Sustainable Concept Aircraft Family

Embraer has unveiled four sustainable concept aircraft. The Energia family, which range from nine to 50 seats, incorporate different propulsion technologies: electric, hydrogen fuel cell, dual fuel gas turbine and hybrid-electric. Each is now being evaluated for its technical and commercial viability. Luis Carlos Affonso, Embraer's SVP Engineering, Technology and Corporate Strategy, explained, “We're working to refine concepts that can reduce emissions sooner rather than later. Small aircraft are ideal for testing and proving new propulsion technologies so they can be scaled up.”

United Can Continue with Vaccine Mandate, Judge Rules

On Monday, a federal judge in Texas ruled that United Airlines’ employee vaccine policy can proceed after six United employees filed a suit to block it in September. The carrier’s policy states that staff who receive medical or religious exemptions can apply for non-customer facing roles, while those who do not meet exemption criteria will be placed on unpaid leave. Judge Mark Pittman wrote in his ruling, “It is not for the Court to decide if United’s vaccine mandate is bad policy. Rather, it is the Court’s role to determine if Plaintiffs carried their burden to obtain a preliminary injunction.”

Star Alliance Biometrics Goes Live at Vienna Airport

Lufthansa Group’s Miles & More members can now use Star Alliance Biometrics at Vienna International Airport’s Terminal 3. To do so, they must register via the Miles & More app, accept the terms of use and upload a photo of themselves to confirm their identity. Passengers will then be able to pass through security and board the aircraft without presenting any documentation. The facial recognition technology allows passengers to wear masks throughout the process. The free service is available for Austrian, Lufthansa and SWISS flights from Vienna as well as at Munich and Frankfurt airports.

Air NZ to Require Proof of Vaccination, Negative Test for Domestic Flights

From mid-December, passengers flying domestically with Air New Zealand will be required to present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result prior to check-in. The carrier’s CEO, Greg Foran, commented, “Delta has really upped the stakes. What once kept us safe is no longer enough and we need an extra layer of protection.” The protocol, which applies to those aged 12 and above, will remain in place until March 31, 2022. If travelers are unable to provide the requisite proof before their flight, Flexirefund customers can receive a refund and others can turn their fare into credit.

After the successful rollout of VeriFLY, with up to 250,000 Aer Lingus passengers using the app, the airline has signed a deal with Daon to extend its use across the Aer Lingus network. VeriFLY allows passengers to upload and receive approval of their COVID-19-related documentation. They receive a “green tick” on the app to confirm they have met the appropriate COVID-19 requirements for their destination. The app also allows users to avoid airport queues by providing online check-in so they can proceed straight to bag drop or the boarding gate.

IAMA Launches Request for Proposal Service

The independent Aircraft Modifier Alliance (IAMA) has recently launched a new initiative in the form of a request for proposal (RFP) service. The service was created to make it easier for airlines that have a specific modification requirement to obtain the right upgrade. To use the service, an airline representative simply needs to complete a request form on the IAMA website.
