APEX Board Members Highlight Digital Innovation and Communication as Keys to Recovery

Hosted by Inmarsat and APEX, yesterday’s FlightPlan advanced the conversation from April’s crisis mode to one of hopeful pragmatism. The virtual event pinpointed the industry’s cautious steps towards a ‘new normal,’ characterized by heightened focus on touchless travel through digital innovation and building passenger confidence through effective communication. APEX board members from Air Canada, Aeromexico, Japan Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines shared their views on these topics.

Uganda Airlines Selects Inflight Dublin for IFE Content

Uganda Airlines will kick off a new era in December as it takes delivery of its first Airbus A330-800neo and expands to intercontinental flights. As part of that growth, the carrier has chosen Inflight Dublin to provide in-flight entertainment. Uganda Airlines’ CEO Cornwell Muleya wanted an “experienced and stable partner,” and expects the selection will “ensure a smooth entry into service, providing the highest level of service to our passengers.” The five-year deal calls for quarterly updates of a bespoke content package for Uganda Airlines’ passenger audience, including local and international content.

United Plans February Return to JFK Airport

United Airlines will bring New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport back to its route map in February 2021 after a five-year hiatus. The carrier is initially planning double-daily flights to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Those routes once served as key components of the airline’s premium traveler focus and will again lean in that direction. United intends to use its Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with 46 business-class seats, by far its most premium-heavy configuration, for the routes. The carrier also mentions potential for cargo demand in the market, noting that the 767s can carry containers and connect goods onwards to Asia from the west coast hubs.

Hong Kong, Singapore to Launch Travel Bubble

Multiple tests for passengers will drive a quarantine-free travel “bubble” between Hong Kong and Singapore as the two cities look to reopen international borders. The initial plan takes a measured approach, allowing just 200 passengers on a single flight in each direction per day from November 22. Any spike in untraced local cases in either city will see the bubble immediately suspended. The pair chose to forgo quick tests in favor of the more accurate PCR option. Ong Ye Kung, Singapore’s transport minister, said, “This is as close as it gets to cross-border travel pre-COVID-19, and this is only possible because both Singapore and Hong Kong have successfully controlled the spread of COVID-19.”

PIT to Test New Tech at xBridge Innovation Center

The facility includes xGate, a functional boarding gate inside the terminal that will operate as a working lab to test concepts to improve air travel, explained Katherine Karolick, SVP for Information Technology at PIT: “The xBridge is a physical manifestation of the innovative mentality we’ve been cultivating here at PIT for years. This will be a proving ground for new technology that will benefit the airport, our airline partners and the passengers we collectively serve.”

Real-Time Passenger Flow Monitoring Coming to Nice

Nice Côte d’Azur Airport is relatively small compared to the number of passengers it handles every year. To help ensure safe and comfortable passage, the Airport Authority is investing in the Smart Flows passenger monitoring system. By monitoring anonymous Wi-Fi logs, the system can help identify chokepoints in movements through the terminals and allow the airport to respond, either in real-time for a one-off incident or through larger projects as patterns are recognized.
