Collins Aerospace Acquires FlightAware

Collins Aerospace (Collins) has completed its acquisition of FlightAware, a provider of global flight tracking solutions, predictive technology, analytics and decision-making tools. It will become part of Collins’ Connected Aviation Solutions business unit, which is focused on advancing the company’s connected ecosystem solutions. Jennifer Schopfer, president of Connected Aviation Solutions at Collins Aerospace, said FlightAware “delivers the potential to reduce unplanned maintenance, improve dispatch reliability, and to know exactly when the plane will be on the runway or at the terminal to keep flight schedules on time.”

Iberia Express Launches Immfly’s Retail On Board Solution

Immfly, the digital onboard services provider for Iberia Express, is digitizing the carrier’s in-flight retail experience using a new solution dubbed Retail On Board in partnership with catering provider DO & CO. It allows passengers to order and pay for products from Iberia Express’ buy-on-board menu using their personal electronic devices. Payments are enabled by an Android Electric Point of Sale system that manages backend warehouse operations and inventory. These capabilities are also available as part of Boeing Digital Direct, a complete digital services platform for commercial aviation.

Wizz Selects Geven for Economy-Class Seating, Again

Wizz Air has selected Geven to outfit its incoming fleet of 20 Airbus A321XLR aircraft with SuperEco economy-class seating, which will bring the total number of Geven-equipped Wizz Air aircraft to 232. Discussing the new ultra-light, ergonomic seat design, Owain Jones, chief supply officer and legal officer at Wizz Air, said, “These seats will contribute to Wizz Air’s sustainability initiatives, which aim to reduce fuel burn and thus reduce emissions by a further 25% in the next decade.”

Alaska Airlines Details Quicker IFE Portal

Alaska Airlines has introduced an upgraded in-flight entertainment (IFE) portal that cuts down the amount of clicks necessary to access different activities, such as purchasing connectivity or watching movies and TV shows. “On our coast-to-coast flights, about 70% of our flyers log onto our Wi-Fi or enjoy our free movies and TV,” said Todd Traynor-Corey, Alaska Airlines’ managing director, Guest Products. This month, the airline is showing holiday movies including films from Hallmark's Countdown to Christmas lineup.

ANA to Launch “Demon Slayer” Anime Campaign

In January 2022, All Nippon Airways (ANA) will introduce a new livery on one of its Boeing 767-300ER aircraft inspired by the anime TV series “Demon Slayer.” As part of a limited edition promotion, ANA will add episodes of the show to its in-flight entertainment offering from December, and domestic passengers will receive Demon Slayer-themed paper cups and toys. Domestic aircraft will feature Demon Slayer headrest covers and in-flight announcements will be made by the characters.

Eurowings Begins Half-Price “Happy Hour” to Cut Waste

Eurowings has announced new sustainability initiatives including a “happy hour” wherein it will offer a 50% discount on fresh food during its last flights of the day to reduce waste. The carrier will also use artificial intelligence to acquire data from each flight to adjust the items loaded to more accurately meet demand. It has set a goal to reach 100% renewable and recycled packaging by 2050. Eurowings recently increased the selection of vegan and vegetarian snacks and meals onboard and has begun stocking Fairtrade brand Lemonaid and organic tea brand ChariTea.

ATPCO Launches Five Councils to Improve Digital Retailing

ATPCO has formed five global councils to identify and implement ATPCO data, standards and technology that enables airlines to improve their digital retail offerings. An Offer Content Council will be responsible for the content needed to create airline offers and consumer visualization standards; a Customer Care Council will be responsible for enabling consistent application of airline customer servicing policies; and a Market Tools Council will be responsible for selective consultative user groups for ATPCO commercial products. There will also be a Settlement Council and Distribution and Infrastructure Council.
