Could “Green” Loyalty Programs Have a Place in Sustainable Travel?

Frequent flyers are the 1% of the world’s population responsible for up to half of global aviation emissions. Many are arguing for the need to decrease the emissions generated by this group with a frequent flyer tax. Theoretically, it would replace Air Passenger Duty,  but only kick in for individuals flying more than once a year, with the money generated being invested in green initiatives. However, it seems airlines believe “green” loyalty programs also have a part to play. For example, Lufthansa is launching a passenger reward system for those who support the use of sustainable aviation fuel.
